*** DIESEL WALT *** Oil Differences?

Changing oil in a TwinDisc MG-507. The plate on the case says 1.72-gals capacity. Should I be using regular 30w motor oil? Other oil?

Thanks, Snapper. I need to change the engine and TwinDisc oils. Found a switch on the engine that reads, “oil drain pump” but haven’t found a pump or outlet.<br /><br />The engine requires 16-quarts, the TwinDisc 7-quarts. The guage spouts (engine and TwinDisc) are serrated for a pump hose to attach. I’m thinking electric for draining and filling … recommendations or suggestions on draining/filling? <br /><br />Also, what is the difference between diesel engine oils? Do I need to be concerned with CH-4 vs. CG-4 vs. CF-4 oils? I presume the diesel oil is different from what is used in my car??? Is the TwinDisc ok with any 30w? … no combustion in there.

Hi Rabbit..<br /><br />NO pump? Oh no! j/k.. If you plan to perminately mount and plumb in a pump, get a Reverso or a Groco pump, add a couple empty 5 gallon buckets, and pump away..... Both reverse and will pump out the old, and pump in the new.. I very seldomly pump in the new oil because of the old oil left in the hose.. You don't know what crud's still in that hose, or the pump for that matter.. Rather pour it in where I can (gallon jugs )..<br /><br />For the Twin Disc, just make sure the oil (SAE 30) is certified to pass TO-2 or C-3 specifications... Don't forget to change the filter..<br /><br />For the Cat, Shell Rotella T is what most of my customers use... Chevron Delo is another good oil.. As for the difference in the oil (diesel Vs. your car), ask LubeDude cause I have'nt the foggiest idea where to even start...

I have to admit to hiding from this one. Im not a heavy equipment person, my experience is with smaller engines only. I did try and do some research before comming out of hiding, but actually found nothing on your question, I would try and get information from the manufacturer.<br /><br />To answer your question about whether there is a difference in diesel oil and regular, there deffinatly is a difference. You can use a diesel oil in a gas engine, but not the other way around. Diesel oils have aditives that fight acid buildup from the high sulfer fuels, also they have a very robust detergency package. they also have a very high TBN rating and usually a high dose of ZDDP.<br /><br />Sorry I couldnt have been more help.

I don’t think the TwinDisc is going to have a problem with acid build up since there is no combustion in it so I am thinking straight 30w motor oil.<br /><br />Boomyal – TwinDisc is a marine transmission made by Caterpillar. It fits in nicely between the motor and he prop shaft. <br /><br />Renaming and trolling for DieselWalt's input. <br /><br />DieselWalt – Differences in CH-4 vs. CG-4 vs. CF-4 diesel engine oils? And do I need to be concerned with which one I use? Your input on this thread would be appreciated.

I dont know offhand what the differences are. I assume it has to do with additive packages.<br />Just about every oil made for diesel use is rated CF-4 now. That will exceed CATs recommendations. According to Detroit, CAT, and Cummins you can run your OTR tractor 90,000 miles between service intervals with CF-4 oil. How does this compare to marine use? I dunno. But it's obviously good stuff. Go CF-4 30W. Then go enjoy your boat.

Diesel oils are very high detergent and have additives to keep from foaming. The anti foaming additives are particularly important on engines that use crankcase oil to activate the injectors.<br /><br />You cannot go wrong with Delo or Rotella T.
