Differences in Outboard Controls? Fully Enclosed vs. Remote keyed - Please explain?

All -

Recently upgraded the engine on my 19' Spectrum from a 1988 Evinrude 70 hp with the enclosed box controller (key in back, neutral throttle on top, shift control on the side) to a 1996 88 hp with stand alone shifter and remote key.

My questions are:

1 - Is there a way to rev or increase the rpms at idle to make starting and testing easier?
2 - I mounted the shift control to the side where the box control was by cutting a larger hole and screwing it together. Mounted the key switch at the front of the front of the panel so it does not interfere with shifter operation. Is this acceptable?

Also, looked at switching the controls since they are both Evinrude motors, but it was more difficult than I am capable of doing.

Thank you.

You still have a neutral fast idle feature but it engages differently. You either grasp the shifter handle and simply pull straight out (toward the center of the boat) to disengage the shifter, then move the handle forward for fast idle. You pull back to neutral to re-engage. Or there may be a button in the center of the lever where it pivots. Push the button and move the lever forward to fast idle. Again, pull back to neutral to re-engage.

The button is on the Quicksilver 3000. I just trashed out mine and replaced with a new edition 2000 which is like the one you had. On mine, you had to wiggle the handle (fore and aft) while putting pressure on the black button to get it to go in and release the shifter so that you could move the handle forward giving you fast idle function only. Second problem I had with it was you can only move to neutral once as the button pops out. On starting the engine, sometimes the rpm's would be excessive so I would pull it back and accidentally go too far. A real pain.
Hope you have better luck,

Mark
