Re: Disc Brake Rotors

I always turn my rotors if they are turnable.

I do admit to doing "pad slaps" to the rear brakes if the rotors look ok. Front brakes are always turned/replaced as I always seem to regret it after if I don't due to noise and some pedal oscillations.

With the price on most cars now a days, I normally just replace them and am done with it, pads and new rotors for my Jeep cost me less than $160 for all axles, new ceramic pads and rotors, if I wanted instead of pads, I could have added $40 bucks and got new rotors, loaded calipers and new e-brakes shoes..had them changed out in about an hour, instead of driving to town(30 miles one way) waiting a day or two, then driving back to pick them up..

Re: Disc Brake Rotors

Just wanted to mention......I have always replaced rotors when they warp. I was taught that once a rotor overheats and warps, that the metal grain structure has changed and will continue to warp, even though it was turned, and will warp again at a faster rate.

This is true with cheep rotors. If you have quality ones you can easly get more than a couple of turnings out of them. I have even had to turn the rotors right out of the box to get a quality brake job. cheep rotors just are not worth it.

If you buy a car to turn around and sell, cheap rotors can be the way to go. Everytime I have bought the econo rotors, 6 months later they needed replaced. Anymore, I bypass the cheapies and go with the better quality ones even if I plan to sell the car. I wouldn't sleep at night if anyone got hurt because of a botched brake job.

I'm with QC, many times I have done pad slaps. 80 grit on a DA does help deglaze a rotor. Done this many times on my own vehicles and have never had to do a Fred Flintstone stop................SS

My grandfather and I were just talking about breaks the other day and how more often they get warped. My grandfather works for NAPA so for us its cheaper with his 75 percent off discount to just buy new rotors. Now-a-days he was tell me Napa gets many requests from different places to turn them down even brand new because they arent even perfect from factory. And by the good rotors, don't be the guy that doesnt care if he can stop...

"I wouldn't sleep at night if anyone got hurt because of a botched brake job". Marcoalza, that is admireable and I hope all mechanics feel the same way. That statement should be used when someone asks for a half&%$ brakejob. It might change their mind.
