Is it a "no no" to connect a brass barb to a stainless steel fuel filterhead?

Re: Dissimilar Metals

My water seperator is made from aluminum and came with brass fittings. I do not think it should be a problem. I have seen brass fittings used with aluminum all the time on other equipment.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Re: Dissimilar Metals

When I was nineteen I worked for a commercial plumbing company. I remember being taught that galvanic corrosion was a real problem in plumbing systems after about 50 years or so of use. Seems copper and steel could be a problem after about thirty years. Obviously if you are burying pipe in the ground that you want to last a couple of life times, galvanic corrosion should be a major consideration. I will probably not own a boat after that amount of time. Don't sweat it.
I think that galvanic corrosion becomes a real concern in boats that are exposed to an electrolyte, like salt water. Or you moor your boat in a big marina where stray currents from other boats accelerate the galvanic process. In other words, unless you are dragging your fuel filter through salt water marinas, you should be ok for 50 years or so.

Re: Dissimilar Metals

There are no concerns with brass and stainless steel, the combinations to avoid are aluminum and plain steel or stainless steel below the exterior water line. Brass and bronze is one of the best metals in salt water and caustic environments. Neither will react to one another in any way, in fact I would suppose that the brass will outlast the stainless in most cases depending on the grade of either.
