If you are lacking around 3/8" of going all the way down, then you haven't got the oil pump shaft into the distributor.
If you are pushing down on the distributor too hard while bumping the engine over, the oil pump will turn along with the distributor shaft. The weight of the distributor alone should allow the distributor to drop down onto the oil pump shaft.

i'm lacking about 3/16 of an inch of it seating all the way down on the gasket. went an tried it again after i read your post. gear are clean and not scared up.

Seloc says thumb on #1 crank, feel compression, line up mark, turn rotor 1/8 turn counter clockwise and insert. merc manual states more. crank engine intil #1 intake closes, contine cranking until pointer lines up. which is right.

They are both correct. Difference is that the merc way you have to be able to see the rockers to know when the intake valve closes. The Solec way is identifying the compression stroke by pressure on your thumb.

To get the distributor to seat in completely it must engage the gears and the oil pump shaft. Once you get the distributor meshed in the gears you will need to rotate the crankshaft (by hand wrench or by bumping motor over with starter) to get the distributor to line up and engage the oil pump. When it lines up with the pump shaft it will fall into place.

You can also look down in the engine and see the distributor shaft. Turn it with a long screwdriver till the distributor will go into it. May take a couple of tries to get the distributor to twist into it do to the twist in the gears, but it will go all the way down without force.

Regarding getting the engine to #1 TDC, I just use the hose from the compression tester in #1 cylinder and put my thumb over it. Then crank with the remote starter (you asked about that earlier as I recall)till it start building compression. Then watch the vibration dampner and timing mark till they come together. Turning by hand is usually easier. Then put the distributor in, turn the oil pump shaft, check that the rotor points the way you want it, and adjust the oil pump and the distributor as needed.

I put them in all the time and really don't think about what it takes to do.

OH, and be careful the new distributor gasket isn't off to the side and holding the distributor from going all the way down. That would be about 3/16 of an inch if I remember right.

ok i got the distributer in properly, plug wire in proper place checked 4 times, won't start. gas to carb, can see it squirt when pumping throttle, plug sparks on # 1 at right time, but spark is weak. have new coil and wires coming. what am i overlooking or doing wrong. using seloc and merc manuals. check valve adjustment 3 times.

Re: distributer 4.3 1998

Make sure you have not over adjusted the valves and have lost compression. It's easy to do on a SBC when you're frustrated and trying to quickly finish the job.

Also, a quick check... When the timing mark is is what you believe to be TDC on #1, pull #4 spark plug and stick a small screwdriver in the plug hole. If you aligned properly, the screwdriver should go in a ways. If not, you'll feel the piston head right away. If you feel the piston head, just pull the distributor up and rotate the rotor 180*. If your timing alignment is correct, you know to start investigating elsewhere. Again, chit happens when you get frustrated.

He's Already Been there,.........

Matter of Fact,.... Keith left a note about posting 2 or more threads about the Same Issues........

If you wish to move further feedback to your Other Thread,.....
Atleast include a link to the Proper Thread.....
