Anyone see any issues with building a boat ladder from copper tubing? (freshwater boat)

I have an '83 checkmate enticer that lost its ladder before I got it. The screwholes are all there but the ladder is gone. I can not find a ladder that fits the same pattern. I can have a SS one made for about $3-400 but do not want to spend that much. I just got one of the hook type portable ladders that I will try out as soon as I get the boat on the water but I do not have high hopes it will work with my boat type. Rope ladders didnt work either.

I am pretty damn handy, so I thinking about building one. I have a MIG welder, but cannot TIG for aluminum or SS. I am thinking I can probably solder a pretty nice ladder out of copper, but have never seen or heard anyone doing that before so figure there is a reason for that. Does it not hold up in the water? Get too Hot? Also, does anyone know where to buy the hinges for boat ladders?

-Thanks,
DAN

Copper would be too soft to support the weight of a person, and sweated joints may be a problem too..It would probably distort and break the joints.

You might be able to buy some extruded aluminum sections at your local home store and rivet one together...otherwise keep an eye out on Craigslist for an inexpensive used one...you can also search here for possible replacements that don't cost as much... Telescoping Boat Ladders - iboats

+1. I would use aluminum, or even PVC, but I think copper will be to soft and expensive.

Iboats... :D

I don't think copper would be a good material either, bends too easy.

It would probably be the cheapest and easiest to buy another ladder and drill new holes for 1 side. (probably not the answer you're looking for, but...)
