I don't use flapper discs. I use a backup pad and the resin coated discs. 24 grit from Harbor Freight.
Backup Pad and 5 discs under $15 bucks.

Thanks WOG. What would the average DIY do without HF. I think I'm there twice a month.

I'm still in the grinding process. Grind, grind, and grind some more. The guys in the Chaparral factory sure laid in a lot of glass with those chopper guns they used. Thanks to the guys recommending Full face respirators. I was using the 3m half face respirator. I purchased a 3m full face respirator this week and it's worth the money. $63.99 on Ebay with a pair of cartridges. I don't have to stop and clean my prescription glasses at all now. No fogging at all and better protection.

If you are doing a full Gut restore with all that grinding This ^^^^ IS the only respirator to use!!!! Being a Woodworker I have the luxury of the same DustCollection system and it is a great thing to have but not everyone can afford to buy one for their restore project. I wonder if they are at the Rental Stores??

Update I spent the long weekend grinding. Praise The Lord the bottom hull is done. I know I'm gonna find places to touch up. I left the deck lip for measuring purposes. I'm ready to build and install my transom. Before and after pix below. Any tips and or advice greatly appreciated. :joyous:

"Houston We Have A Problem" I had a mishap with the grinder-operator error. How should I fix this? Pix below. I think that is a streak below the hole

That wood looks rotten anyways. I have exact same design in my boat and all of the wood was water logged, so i removed. looked like a 2''x2'' cut at a 45 degree angle. I'm just going to put a stringer in its place on both sides. picture shown after removal (went from bow to stern and were 6 inch segments of wood)

The outermost strakes on my tub were made that way, seems like a strip of plywood, not very big dimensionally, was laid in the strakes and then covered over with cloth and resin...of course, they became hollow over the years as the wood rotted away...
In my case, I just ground away the upper layer of glass, re-filled the strakes with thick PB flush to level of the hull, and layered on new 1708 biaxial cloth...right or wrong, overkill or not, it "felt right"......BTW, I only ended up doing that to the outermost strakes, and partially to the next couple of inner strakes, but only until they joined up with the newly installed stringers that took care of filling all but those sections...

Here you can see more or less what I am talking about...

Where the red lines are, that's where I did the PB filler, same on the other side...

You might be able to get away with just leaving them hollow as they are and just make a simple repair over the hole...

When you go to mix your fiberglass resin use the metric system: 500ml = 5ml hardener at 1% 7.5ml at 1.5% 10ml at 2%, so much easier than trying to mix pints and quarts.

Get yourself some syringes for accurate hardener measuring totally worth it.

I have seen that most people use standard disposable rubber gloves when working with resin, but I used the heavier kitchen gloves. I was having a hard time messing around with disposable glove especially once my hands got sweaty. With the kitchen gloves I cleaned them after each use with acetone and hung them to dry on the inside between batches. I just found that this was easier for me.

Good luck and I am looking forward to seeing more of your progress.

Finished cutting out the transom today.
Clamped the pattern down so it would not move.

Looks great! I'm almost to that step as well. I decided to remove ALL wood from the hull (strakes and all) good thing because all the wood was totally soaked and crawling with termites! Again great progress and always enjoy viewing the updates!

... Where is Middletown, OH? I'm originally from Marion, OH. I'm in the Air Force stationed in Las Vegas now.

Middletown is in between Dayton and Cincinnati along Interstate 75. I worked a festival in Marion about 10 years ago. Nice festival the headline entertainment was Marty Stuart.

I sawed out 3 of 4 stringers today. The two outside shorter stringers went well and fit nicely. Any suggestions on making this easier?
