A fellow told me yesterday that if I put boyessen reeds in my engine that not to expect it to last a season. Is there any truth in this? I know it helps with smothness and rpm but what about the reeds not wearing down.

If they lasted, manufacturers would install them. That way they'd avoid replacing a powerhead under warranty should a reed break and get eaten by the motor. Durability is the issue, and that's why they use metal reeds. But I certainly expect Boyesen reeds to last more than a single season.

Ive had motors with Boyesens that lasted for years. Even after I sold the boat the motor was still running good. The one thing that kills them is when the motor lean pops or "sneezes" at idle. High rpm will not hurt them nor will many many hours of run time.

Good luck!

I'm with Dhadley on this...most Boyesen, or fiber-type reeds are busted because the instructions were never read to begin with...the idle circut must be enriched when using these reeds, and very few people ever follow these guidlines.
I've got an old 77'115 jonny I put reeds in 9 years ago.......still runs perfect, and I installed them a year ago in my 97' 115 Jonny too.

Another thing that breaks them is if you use the stock reed stops. Use the rev plates supplied and all will be well.

Good luck!
