I run a 1991 75 hp Mariner outboard, Problem-when running motor at any speed it acts like it is running out of fuel, the motor slowly dies but does not shut off, when I pump the fuel ball it works just fine, I installed a new fuel line and ball and all new connectors.

Due to today gas and ethanol is my fuel pump bad?

Thanks.

if it just started this trend, sounds like it, also make sure your bulb is siphoning in the right direction. Buy a rebuild kit for a few dollars.

Wow, I really like this site, thanks for the reply, and yes it just started doing it, and my bulb in installed right.

My next question is can I rebuild the fuel pump my self, a kit is about $15 or is this something for the pro's.?

Re: Do I have a fuel pump problem?

so easy a caveman can do it.

a mariner book would help, but its about as simple as taking off the bolts open up very very carefully or little parts will fall out. note how its assembled, and reassemble with the new parts.

The kit might even have a picture in it to help you.:D

BTW, I consider fuel pump maintainance an annual item in the spring. The reason is because when the fail, it's usually sneaky, and when they are beginning to fail to deliver the fuel, and you are still able to go, the engine can lean out and burn down pistons. Fifteen bucks is cheep insurance.

hope it helps

Re: Do I have a fuel pump problem?

Update on my fuel problem, first a big thanks to those who stimulated me to fix it my self.

But to the guy who said a cave man could rebuild a fuel pump must have know smarter cave men than I.

That small quarter size gasket with that little bittie pin that had to be pushed through dat small hole was a tuffy. these 2 gaskets were my problem, they were leaking presure real bad.

New plugs, new spark plug wiring due to rust, wow, 3x$20 a wire$$$$$.

New gas line that was eaten up.

Now for the test run, it runs better now than when I first bought the thing!

No more having to pump the gas ball once she is running, and when starting, just tap the starter for a split second and she is off, and after sitting for 2 hrs on a fishing spot, just hit dat Ole starter and she is off, all of this was not possible before this cave-man fixed it.

Thanks, great site.
