Do I have an alternator or???

I have a '78 70hp Rude, I'm trying to find out if I have an alternator, magneto, or lighting coil ignition. How would I go about finding this out? I'm looking to install a Teleflex Tach and it indicates it will only work with motors that have alternators. <br /><br />Thanks for your help,<br />pfistey1

Set the tach for a 6 pole (12 pulse) alternator and it should work fine on your motor as long as your charging system is operational.
