I know this is an old post but I just ran across it. Saskatoon if you run across my this, how did this turn out? I'm getting a 1973 Mercury 9.8 in a few days and who knows what the heck I'll run into. Thanks.

Just to let everybody know.....I was RIGHT! I changed the spark plug coils and the motor fired right up and ran beautifully ever since...best thing I ever did was listen to my instincts...

Hey Saskatoon--was it the stator coils or the ignition (spark) coils? The stator coils charge the capacitors in the CDI box, it then sends current to the ignition coils and to create spark when the trigger signals it to do so.

i have spark on all six cylinder,i use spark tester,and it is orange color on all six,motor run alright,u think i might have stator problem too?alos i unplug the ignition core one at the time find out one does not effect running,what may cause that,cdi?or stator?i switch plug and core all all is good,just that cylinder?any help will be great.

best way to make a spark tester is to get an old plug lead cut it in half and feed both ends into a piece of clear plastic tubing with a gap in the middle set to whatever distance you want ,that way you can run the motor safely and watch the spark through the plastic tubing
