I really do not have a size preferance. The bigger bayliner that started this thread would have been fun for family time on the water but the thing just needed too much work and it fought me everytime i tried to verify that something was good.

It was kind of funny. I towed it to my house this morning and decided that I am glutten for punishment. I told myself tbat if it will start and gears will engage then i will keep it and start on repairs. My oldest daughter was outside with me since 7 am and it was over 100 by 10:30. I tried all kinds of crazy tricks to get the starter out and or repaired. I told my daughter that it was like it wanted to be scrapped. If it could have just thrown me a bone i would have kept it. Alas it did not wanna be fixed. We went and got some Mc Donalds and I called the guy who made the offer. He was at my house by 3:00 I almost felt bad taking the money.

FWIW... I put two starters on my engines last july in 95 plus degree heat... both engines had to be pulled to get to the starters...

The Omega boat was bought this morning. I know it had the OMC but it was a creampuff and looked to be very well taken care of. Oh well the search continues....

From my understanding Volvo stern drives are good and parts are readily available.

Is there a shop that will work on them near you, preferably one that stocks some parts? Nearly everyone works on Merc and quite a few work on Volvo-- simply one may be quite a distance from you. A Volvo makes a more sense than an OMC.

I am a mechanic and will most likely do most of the work myself. We do have a bayliner dealership hear which should be able get any part that was original on a bayliner. This boat is a 1987 Bayliner CX225. It needs a little work as far as the apholstery is worn and will need to be replaced but I can use it for now. The floor is completely solid and I could not find any week spots. I opened the ski locker and it was clean and dry inside. It has a 5.0 liter Volva Penta outdrive. It starts and runs. The exterior of the boat is in good shape. It is in a storage yard right now but he says he can bring a hose out. I am going to hook up the earmuffs and run some water through the motor where it sits before I commit to anything. The trailer looks brand new although it will need new tires from sun damage. The price is 1500.

Don't expect ANYTHING specific to any boat over 10 years old and often 5 years to be available from the dealership....

I don't have any experience w volvo but I believe you can get parts for at least most of them tho I'm not sure about the earlier ones

For the most part mercruiser is EASY to get parts for and OMC is even starting to get hard to find decent used parts.

After it has been run I HIGHLY suggest that you propose a "conditional sale" IE SHOW him the cash and explain that you will put it in his hand after a successful sea trial.

This was not a good period for Bayliner. Tap test the transom, get a flashlight and mirror into the bilge. Boats rot from the bottom up and the floor is often the last place it shows up. Lighting her up on muffs is nice, but until she runs under load for a while you cannot be sure about the motor either. Still,, only $1500 + tires + ??? so even if she turns into trash you can sell the trailer and still only have a small loss... if a diamond in the rough you may break even on value.

Re: Do I need this Boat project or should I keep looking. 85 Bayliner 2150 Cuddy Cab

I talked to the owner of the boat today and suggested that we take it out to a local lake for a shake down run. He is kinda a middle man. He bought the boat in November sent it to a guy he found on craigslist to have the upholstery redone. He left the guy $400 as a deposit and they guy had the until last month with very little work done. 2 seat cushions are redone but not a real good job. The guy also stole the battery out of the boat. He assured me the motor runs very good but has not had it in the water himself. I told him we can take it out and drop it in the water and buzz around the lake a few times to make sure everything works. He sounded more excited about getting on the water than I was. He has never put a boat in the water before.

Also to all that said make sure I put it in the water before I commit, I thank you. I also talked with the owner of the local boat shop here in Bakersfield and he said the exact same thing. He said that you really don't learn a hold bunch running on the ear muffs and that the water pressure from the hose can hide a water pump that is not working. He also said the Penta outdrive is a good unit but it has a cone style clutch and you can not tell if it is worn out till you are using it in the lake. Running it on the muffs will basically verify that the engine starts and idles and can be revved up. Almost everything else will need to be checked in the water.

I need to change the title of this thread to do I need this boat and get rid of the Bayliner 2150 part.

Edit I missed this one totally.

You need an aluminum outboard boat. Plain and simple Tough as nails, reliable as all get out, and easy and cheap to rebuild/ restore.

I am excited to try the boat out tonight in the water. I spent the morning loading my truck up with supplies. So far i have brought 1 marine battery i had picked up for the other boat that never worked out. I also have 2 car batteries that i can jump start off of if it becomes hard to start. I have a fire extinguisher in case things really go south. I grabbed my life jackets and paddles from my kayak in case i am paddling to shore. Tool kit for small repairs. Cant wait to hear it run in the water.

Ok I hope this is not a bad omen but the test drive has been postponed till tomorrow due to technical difficulties. I meet the owner today over at the storage yard where it is being stored and I installed my battery as his was stolen previously. The plan was to light it off make sure it runs then take it to the lake and test it out. Well we never got past the start part. Turn the key and the boat just clicks. I removed the starter and inspected it. It looked very clean. I jumped power to bench test it and nothing. I then took the starter apart and it was very dirty inside. I cleaned it as best I could with what I had there and I eventually did get it to bench test ok but it still would not engage when I put it back in the boat. I got about 1/2 a turn of the motor then the starter quit again. The owner and I discussed it and he is going to buy a new starter from the boat store tomorrow. I called down to Galey's Marine supply and they have one in stock for $210. He will bring it tomorrow and we will try again.

I have looked at several boats and every boat I have found either had a brand new starter or needed a starter. Is the starter motor a high failure item on a boat? If we install this starter and everything else works, at least that is one thing I wont have to buy again for a while. Better to have these things fail when he still owns it and will pay for it.

Hi Condor,

Start a new thread for your next boat....

The Volvo sounded pretty good initially, but there are a couple of red flags here. It seems odd that he would buy the boat, put money into it....then sell it. Sounds like a problem. The fact that it has 'technical difficulties' suggests more problems. Take it for a real long testdrive, and take Crabby's advice.

Hopefully tomorrow i will have a test drive to report. I dont feel like he is trying to hide anything. At least this starter did not have rusted bolts holding it in. It came out very easy. Taking the boat out on the water and running it hard is very important at this point. The boat has a lot to prove to me at this point. I do have another boat to look at tomorrow if this one does not work out. There is a jet boat for sale in my area that has a fresh 455 Oldsmobile motor but like everything else it needs a starter. I prefer the prop over the jet but that boat could be fun too.

One question - I've forgotten whether you are a mechanic or mechanically inclined.

When you take it for your test run, offer to pay for the gas - and take it for a good long test run - not just a few minutes. Let the engine get really warm, try it at several different speeds, try accellerating quickly. When you get back home, shut it off, then try and start it up - do this a few times. Then shut it off and leave it for a while...then start it up. All these things may reveal problems. Good luck - I hope this works out for you.

I am a mechanic. I am currently a mechanic for an oil field company but prior to that i worked far a Dodge dealership for 15 years. I worked for a GM dealership prior to that. I know my way around motors transmissions and differentials. I have never worked on an outdrive but i am more than capable of learning.

The boats fuel guage indicates that there is about 1/2 of a tank of gas in it. I plan to run it on the water for at least a 1/2 an hour accelerating and doing other manuvers.

:Big loud BUZZER:

take a portable tank and don't even think about using the gas in the boat's tank... hook the portable to the fuel pump.... IF you buy the boat pump out the old gas and dispose of it... You have no clue how old it is or what may be mixed in it.
