I am having a lot of trouble starting my 1985 OMC 3.0 . It is cranky when the motor is cold and almost imposible to start when warm after siting for a few minutes but when runing it runs fine. I noticed that the carb is moist to wet allarou d all the seals so i am thinking ishould start there. Question is , is it worth rebuilding or a waist of time and money, which is an issue. If new what cost am i looking at. Thanks

Hi rpatton. It would be good to list or provide a pic of the carb your talking about... You can get a rebuild kit for less than $80 for a 4bbl and about $40 for a 2bbl and do it yourself to save on the labor cost....new carbs can be expensive...You can look at my rest thread in my signature below on page 12 post #282 where I show how to rebuild a 4 bbl carb in detail. It is a pretty easy mission if your even somewhat handy.

Unless the butterfly shafts are worn beyond reason and allowing changes in fuel/air mixtures, it is always cheaper to rebuild. I mean after all you are only taking the carb apart and cleaning all the accumulated junk out of all the passages and replacing the old gaskets with new ones. Rebuild is kind of a misnomer in that sense. I'd always go with rebuild and IF that doesn't solve your problem, new is still an option. Most carbs can be refurbished and will work as good as new in most cases. Once parts do become so worn that they no long function properly anymore then it is either time to replace those worn parts OR buy a new ones. I say rebuild...JMHO!

I would go with a rebuild. It is really easy to do. Just find out what you have and go to youtube and start watching some videos. I just rebuilt my Edelbrock 1409 4 barrel carb a few months ago. It was my first time ever rebuilding a carb and it was a piece of cake. Just have a nice large clean work area and take a lot of pictures as you disassemble it. There are also exploded diagrams of most carbs out there if you do some searching around.

The other possibility is you'll spend a bunch of time rebuilding it only to find that it still isn't right. Then what?

Good point. Not sure what to do but will probly do the rebuild since it is pretty cheap.

Unless you value your time as wasted doing things that don't come out like you wanted, you will learn so much about your carb and how things work. I don't think that ever will be wasted time in my book. You are never too old to learn new things ever. If your time is that important, then pay for a new one and move on. I'll take my time and refurbish any carb for not only making it work again, but gaining the knowledge of how it actually was assembled and works as well. That makes you a little smarter for next time... And you WILL have the pleasure AND self satisfaction of doing it yourself as well...:)

Re: do i rebuild or get a new carb

A Rochester 2bbl can be rebuilt in ones's sleep after doing it just once. They don't come any simpler (unless you are talking about the carb on your weed whip or chain saw). If the engine runs fine when once it is running, but is hard to start cold or hot, that says the carb is either misadjusted or there are other "engine" issues such as weak spark or other deteriorating ignition components. Start with the choke setting. On a stone cold engine open the throttle just a bit. The choke butterfly should be closed. Use your finger to try and open it. It should open easily. If the butterfly slams shut when you release it or if it is even partially open when the engine is cold, it is the cause of the cold start problem. With a warm engine, repeat the above process. If the choke plate is not standing perfectly vertical in the bore, it too means there is a choke problem and hence part of the hot start problem. If this is an electric choke, make sure it has power with the key on. If it is a "heat stove" type make sure the pipe is clean and the choke internals work freely. As for hot starts, are you opening the throttle while starting. That is just normal operating procedure.

Re: do i rebuild or get a new carb

Thanks for all the replys. The mainreason for why i feel a rebuild is in order is it is a 1985 motor and am not sure when the carb was rebuilt if ever. I do know all the gaskets and seals seem to be leaking thus i feel a rebuild is in order at least. As far as the choke i know that is out of ajustment due to a so called friend breaking the stand tube last year and he talked me into making the choke open all the time becauae he claimed it was not needed. I have since fixed the tube and in the process of ajusting the choke but is a little tricky to get just right.

That would be your hard start cold problem... I would rebuild it if gaskets are showing signs of leaking....
