Just curious? We do not lock the house even when away. The keys are always in the car etc. When we go to "Town" (the large one 30 miles away)we do lock the car but around home I leave the keys in the truck when I run in the store and will often times just leave it run outside.

I have lived where we did not leave the house without setting the alarm and locking the gate and many times armed the house against intruders while we were there.

Overly trusting ...yeah, proabably
Plum nuts?...Maybe
Am I the last Idot around or are there others that grew up this way and live in an area where they feel they can still do this also?

Re: Do you lock your doors?

You're living on borrowed time then. I never used to lock the car or the house. I did remove the keys from the ignition, but never locked anything....Until my home was rifled in 1989. Since then, I allways lock-up, even when home at night. The vehicles are left unlocked so the mutants don't break into them.
They can just open the door and rifle them (once... I keep my pistol loaded).

Well, as the old saying goes... "A lock only keeps out an honest thief"

If the scumbag wants in, then they will find a way. I live in the country but I always lock up.
I agree with 12 footer. It's only a matter of time before you're the next victim.

In my area, you are starting to see the thieves work outlying areas where things are less secure and law enforcement less prevalent.

One way to be more secure is to try and think like a thief... Figure out every way possible to get in to accomplish your mission.

I say go ahead and come on in... I've got a large caliber weapon waiting for you!

H.

I lock up when I leave at night.
I lock my cars and trucks up that are not in the garage.
If I leave for an extended period of time, I will turn the dogs loose also.

I am out in the country, so I take my precautions.

I always lock up. Maybe it won't stop them, but I'm hoping it makes it a bit less easy. Like most people in my area, I also have a burgler alarm installed in the house.

I put my lights on a timer if I'm away over night, to make it look like I'm still there.

Crooks look for tell-tale signs of someone being away, so I try not to leave any.

no need to really...
I own a big gun and a big dog and everyone knows.
The only thing we secure when we are not home is the garage door. Our big dog has a dog door; therefore, is usually in the house while we are out. Everyone knows she stays inside. Works out pretty good for us.

My house and car are locked. This is one of the curses of suburban living. My sister in law has no locks anywhere in their Birkshires(MA)home and thinks nothing of it.They sometimes leave the house for a week at a time and it is always unlocked

Locks are only usefull to attract attention to the theif when he is breaking in.

If there is no one's attention to get, they are worthless.

I live in areas that are populated, so I lock everything.

Neumans, in your case I would still lock up, just to keep idiot kids away. A kid will go in your house if they dont have to put forth any effort.

Ken

Re: Do you lock your doors?

Our back door is always unlocked, all the other ones are locked. If someone wants to come in all they gotta do it is break the big glass pane out of the door, no sence locking it. Most people around here know us, never had anything messed with at the house, don't lock cars at the house.

When around town the only one who dosn't lock his car is my dad, I think he's silly for for pressing the little button, but he's never had anything taken.

Re: Do you lock your doors?

If someone wants to get in my house, it would be easy.
I locked myself out twice, broke a window making a lot of noise the second time, even did some yelling to see if anyone would notice. Nope.

The vehicles are open so the ups fedex or mailman can put packages inside.

ALL of the houses around me are much more attractive, and have nicer stuff in the yard.

What about insurance? If I didnt lock and got raided the insurance would not pay out as I took no attempt to secure my property and its part of the policy. So I lock whenever im not in too much money to lose.

Neumanns describes my experience and strategy exactly.

The Hideout hasn't been locked in 14 years.

When I lived in the ghetto my apt. was locked even when I was home.

My truck is always locked when I go to town, but sits running outside the local Post Office.

Like 12Footer I keep and carry loaded heat. Who knows, I might be attacked by a vicious bunny!.

Re: Do you lock your doors?

We don't really have to lock our doors but I try to make it a point to. If anyone around here sees anything suspicious they call the sheriff dept. and it gets checked out pretty quick and also everyone has a police scanner and a cell phone so a would be robber would have a hard time getting away.(if he didn't get shot first) :D

Exactly Chris.
My homeowners and car insurance is based on security and alarms.
If something is broke into and it is found to have been left open or unarmed(alarm), my insurance company would say tough.

I don't have all that money where I can afford to have stuff replaced.
