Wouldn't leave without an anchor, its an important safety device.

You can use a hose reel--the kind in its own box--for your anchor line but it might not be strong enough to lift the anchor.

The anchor is your most important safety device. You have to have one, and it has to be big enough to hold the boat. Add chain, too. If you don't like messing with a big one, get a second smaller one for lightweight use such as fishing in a light wind or current. But don't go out even for a short trip without a full sized anchor and chain.

Yes, we anchor. I have several and have used the windlasses in the past. For lakes, a single mushroom or navy style usually works just fine. If you will be dealing with tides or alot of traffic two or more would be better.

More than anything else be sure your anchor and rode are properly sized for you boat and that you take the time to set them properly.

I use two anchors regularly on my 14' tinny. I dont have a winch, but do want to get the anchormate like CAT was talking about. a 15LB gets tossed off the bow and I have a 3LB collapsable canoe anchor for the stern. Sometimes when there is no wind I just use the 3LB.

Re: Do you use an anchor? Winch?

I use a mushroom anchor that is probably about 12lbs. I just throw it off the side of the boat so that I dont have to climb over my fiance to drop/retrieve it off the bow. I also have an old, rusty, big anchor. Not sure what the proper term is but it looks just like the classic anchor that everyone pictures when they think of an anchor. Once I get an Outboard, and get her in some bigger waters, then I may use that one too.

I like the idea of an anchormate, but at the same time, I like a clean tidy boat and I have a feeling that having that metal arm hanging off the bow and having a winch sticking out of the stern would drive me nuts! Plus, I have running lights so I wouldn't be able to mont the metal arm in the center of the bow. It would have to be off to one side. When it comes to that kind of stuff I am OCD haha I wouldn't be able to handle it!

Re: Do you use an anchor? Winch?

A quick anchor story, don't mean to hijack this thread but kind of funny.

A few years back we took a couple of small boats across to Bimini for a week. While there a tropical depression which turned into a tropical storm as it came over us and a hurricane as it was leaving the Bahamas came across the island and knocked out all the phone lines. Like most tourists we didn't carry much cash and when the phone lines went out credit cards would not work because they couldn't swipe the card. Being the Bahamas it took days to fix the phone system and we had to leave with no cash, therefore I couldn't fill my tank and had to go home on 1/2 tank.

The boat I was with had triple the capacity I had so we knew he was ok, I was marginal as for making it across. Well, 10 miles out of Ft Lauderdale I ran out of fuel. My buddy boat went on and was going to bring me back a couple of 5 gal cans. After he left I checked my radio and found out it was on the blink and we were out of cell phone range. I realized we were still in the gulfstream and drifting about 5 mph so the GPS coordinates he had would do him no good. We were in well over 1000 ft of water so no way did I have enough anchor line to anchor up. I went into panic mode for a few moments until I got an idea.

I had a Penn 12/0 on board with a thousand or so yds of 130 lb test line on it. I tied the anchor to it and let her drop. It did the trick although it still took him a half hour to find me. He to realized we were in the stream so he compensated for the drift then worked his way back to our original position.

When he got there I kissed that anchor goodbye, no way was I going to attempt to reel it in, probably would have broke it off anyway.

I use a Lewmar anchor winch on my 24 footer, we anchor in 250 ft when halibut fishing , thats a long hard pull by hand. an other way is to attach a 4 inch ring to a large float. run the line thru the ring, to pull just drive away, when the chain pulls thru the ring the anchor just hangs there, drift and pull in the rope:D

I run in the rivers a lot, so I have to use an anchor when fishing in the channels. Use the armstrong method.

I rarely anchor but when I do it's a pain to pull 75-125' of anchor line. My next addition to the boat will be a bow pulpit and a good windlass.

Re: Do you use an anchor? Winch?

I use two anchors when anchored at the beach. I was going to use an anchor mount to store the anchor on the bow rail, but this past weekend when I held the anchor in place, I realized it was too long, and would be scraping the bow deck. I also didn't like the way it looked . So I guess I'm looking at making an anchor pulpit again.

Re: Do you use an anchor? Winch?

I river fish so I have several anchors and I just got a Minn Kota deckhand, I have a wireless troller too so I can work the whole boat from the console now.

I have a brake rotor that I filled the vents with lead and drilled an extra hole in it so I can hook my launch rope to it, if the regular anchor slips you just throw that in too and it holds pretty good.

I also have a top for the boat and would get blown off anchor when it was windy so I made an anchor myself, it is aluminum tubes welded together then filled with lead, dang thing weighs 35lbs.

I have several different anchors....from a small 5 lb mushroom to a 15 lb danforth type. I always have two onboard depending on our destination, which will dictate what two to take. They all get retrieved by hand however.:)

We anchor every trip out. I drop and pull manually.

Re: Do you use an anchor? Winch?

If I am anchored deep with a lot of rode out I use an anchor lift ball, with the slip ring to re-float my anchor. Otherwise I just pull it myself. I use an aluminum Fortress, it is only 4 pounds and hold like a fat lady.

http://www.fishing-catalog.com/other products/anchor_ball.htm

We anchor often in 80 to 150 feet of water for diving. The anchor ball and ring make it easy. Of course, a good anchor like the Fortress helps. No need to carry those huge anchors, get a Fortress or Guardian, light and strong and hold great in most bottoms. Easy to pull without a windless or with the retrieval system.

manually deploy and retrieve our anchor--usually only in 20 to 25 feet of water

Re: Do you use an anchor? Winch?

With the wide variety of boats, locations, and uses out there; I was just curious how many people use an anchor on a regular basis and how many of those people have an anchor winch, or just pull it up and drop it manualy.

I always use an anchor, and currently am dropping it and retrieving it manualy. As I can't afford an anchor winch, I'm thinking about ghetto-rigging my own winch on the bow. Maybe use a strap winch like the one on the trailer. Then just replace the strap with the anchor line?

i only have one arm so pulling mine in is very dificult for me i have been thinking about getting one of the ele ones.
