Even though I have a smaller boat(21'6" to be exact) it has a stern light. When you anchor and turn off the nav lights, the stern light goes out and I use my combo mast light that screws onto the top of my windshield. It is a 360? light for when anchored and a 270? with a flip of the switch for a running light, in conjunction with my stern light.

Re: Docking Lights - How Important ??

The most I have ever needed at night is my 4 D-cell maglite and I used to do quite a bit of night fishing. My dad has a handd held spot light, but the only thing I remember ever using it for was the glow in the dark trolling lures.

Edit: Of course the nav and anchor lights too. I was referring to "optional" lights

edit#2: I forgot to mention my favorite night lite for you guys. I have a red led light that you strap on your noggin. You can laugh, but it works great and the red led doesn't destroy night vision like a white light does.

I recommend carrying D cell bow lights; the built-in ones are tempermental, undependable, but too important for safety, not to have a cheap dependable back-up.

I don't have docking lights. But I just had to buy the 3 million candle watt spotlight :D I can light up my dock from ten miles away . Blame that jackazz tim the tool man LOL
The wife was not too happy with the purchase. "You can't use it because you will blind people!!" blah blah blah. Takes the fun out of everything

I don't know about all that. I've found that the only lights that are temperamental are the removable style that you actually have to insert into the fittings. Typically these type are found on smaller boats like bass boats. The fixed bow lights/stern lights have never given me issue aside from the rare burned out bulb.
