Wow that subject line came out funny. I have a 1977 115HP Johnson. I have changed the water pump and it is now running. How do I tell if the pump is operating correctly? I have the unit running on muffs but I dont know if it has a tell tale or pee hole. I ran it for 5 minutes and no warning horn.

My '77 35 hp Erude has a tell-tale - starboard side, but I'm not sure all '77 models had them.

I can lay my hand on the cylinder for just about 3 seconds but not much more. No water was showing in the hoses at the thermostat.

laying your hand on the clinder for only 3 seconds before you have to take it off sounds like it is running a little to warm. Might want to check thermostat to make sure it is not stuck closed or almost closed. good luck

Thermostat (spring with wax sensor) and bypass valve (small impeller and spring) are both out of the engine awaiting new parts. Vernatherm is in and may be the culprit. Parts are on the way - thermostat kit with gaskets, etc. My main problem is finding out whether or not my impeller is functioning correctly. Would be good to know before I take it to the lake.

run the motor with the thermostats removed and all thermostat covers OFF the engine. you should see water gushing from were the stats go.

Put boat in the lake but left it on the trailer. No water came up through the hoses and the thermostat area is dry as a bone. After about 5 minutes, cylinder heads were very hot and alarm went off. Shut it down and went home.

The lower unit is at the shop but the pump is intact. I think the key didn't get installed correctly but I dont know
