No fins are busted but is it bad that they aren't all bent the same way?

If they are bent time to replace. New ones are straight out from the centerline of the drive shaft.

Can't see anything. Sounds like it sat a long time with the blades in an odd position. Bend the blades back and forth looking closely for cracks/ckecking in the rubber at the flex area. No cracks=maybe OK. The impellers aren't very costly, so as long as you've got it torn down put in a new one.

There is no photo and no idea what it's out of, Green, but I look at like this.

If I take out an impeller out of the cup, only a new one will replace it. The bent fins will naturally occur on a brand new impeller in a matter of days. But also through use, the flexing tends to harden the fins which makes them less efficient. Those six flapping pieces are all that are between you having fun on your boat with friends and family, catching the big one or sitting dead on the water with an unhappy Admiral.

While the water pump is open, examine the cup and lower plate for scoring which could lead to early failure of a new impeller. That piece of rubber is cheap insurance against what could be some expensive options

I would never reuse an impeller once removed. It is not that expensive to risk getting stranded

What GA_Boater said. No sense putting back a used impeller when you've gone through the trouble of removing it. Besides, looks can be deceiving. How old is it?

I have seen the fins bent in different directions before. Some people have take out the impeller and turned it upside down and reinstall them. I agree with GA Boater old impeller comes out new one goes in. A little money for a big piece of mind..

Green - Photobucket or another photo hosting site is the best way to put pics in your posts right now due to some forum upgrade issues. For PB, just click on the IMG code under sharing which copies the link from PB and paste it in your post here. Real simple and the photos will show here unless you delete or reorganize you PB albums. Give it a shot.

Asking "does this impeller look good enough to use?" is like asking "does this underwear look clean enough to wear again?"

Replace it with a new impeller and change ur shorts every day LOL

SOTW - I guess a sniff test is useless for an impeller. Is there such a thing as a "commando impeller"? :fear:

I agree with everyone else about changing it if you went to the trouble of removing it, unless you happen have one of those impellers that you can really easily inspect, like most VP stern drives I've worked on. If it only takes a minute or five to remove, re-use it and spend the money you saved on something fun, like boat gas or a nice steak dinner. I think your VP GS SX Cobra is in the subset of engines that have a particularly easy-to-service raw water pump. It's hanging way out on the starboard side and up high, if memory serves. I also recall that it has it's turned by the outer-most belt.

I used to be in the change it every season camp with my 7.4MPI, then I went two seasons just to see what it would look like; it looked the same as it did after one season. This time around I ran it for three season (and one day, the new parts had not arrived yet...). Still worked perfectly and looked good, but I don't want to risk 4 seasons and plan to change mine every three seasons now. I left the old impeller in the housing, bought a new housing and new impeller, and am keeping the old one as a spare. I carry the tools needed to swap it on the water.

Reusing an impeller by turning it over, will usually lead to failure of the impeller. Look closely at the base of the fins and the "elbows" of the fins. If the base has some missing material, or the elbows have cracks in the rubber, toss it out.

The $30 impeller is nothing compared to the two hours of hell required to reach it. If I'm in there the damn thing is getting replaced! Mercruiser can go to hell, why would you put the raw water pump under the motor and behind the fuel pump and filter such that it cannot be reached without major effort? Sorry, got off on a rant there...;)

It is a pain but I got it down now. I can't see the pump unless I remove interior. I just go by feel now.
