does this look like it had power tilt and trim?

The power trim / tilt is clearly shown.----External cylinders.----The pump and reservoir are mounted INSIDE the boat.----Those must come with the motor.----Switch is shown on the handle.

Yes. back in the late 50's Mercury used "Lake X" in Florida for their "brutal" engine testing. Driving their engines over sandbars, logs, concrete bridge railings and such told them that they needed something to soften the impact of the spinning propeller, once airborne due to the LU hitting an obstruction, from ripping out the transom or such when it re-entered the water at something well over the max rpm rating of the engine.

So they added externally mounted shock absorbers between the transom clamp bracket and the engine's mid section. Fast forward. Time to do something better. Make the shock absorbers hydraulically powered cylinders. So they added a hyd. pump and hyd. lines to the replacement cylinders where the shocks were once mounted. I had about a 1974 year model Merc 850 with such an arrangement....worked great. Along that line they also added a kill switch, probably a Mercury (metal) ignition kill switch to the mid section such that when it kicked up the Mercury moved and disconnected/shorted out the triggers to the engine.

Ya I see the switches, and I've seen some with the cylinders that didn't have power t/t I thought they might have been to slow down the drop or if they were charged to help lift.. I think I see some hydo lines coming off the cylinders... Now if I can get the guy to check his messages..

Yes, that looks like the same setup that I have on my 1985 Merc 50HP outboard with power trim & tilt.

My pleasure. I have a pair of 70HP Mercs that use the same T&T setup which will be going onto my Chieftain.

Here's the 50 with new decals applied. 🤓

Hmm I wonder why your 85' has external trim and tilt. My 84' 115 has the built it unit in the mount. I thought they switched to the newer style in the early 80s.
You also seem to have the older lower unit that doesn't have the swept back skeg

Great job on the paint job. I need to tackle that and new decals on mine soon

Those 4 cylinder 50 HP are just an excellent motor.------Hopefully it was treated right during it's 35 year life.
