I changed upper and lower gear unit lube today. The lower used almost full quart and what gets me is the upper used maybe 1/3 of a quart if that. Does that sound right?

per OMC manual, 400 upper takes 16.6 ounces, lower takes 26.7 ounces, and intermediate takes 6.25 ounces
(and tilt clutch takes 4 ounces)

So something is wrong? Since it took about 9 ounces.

yes, you got a big air bubble in there - don't run it until you get all the oil in there.

you are correct.....dont forget to change gear lube in intermediate....as for upper gearcase..if you leave it sit over night, the air bubble will usually work its way to top

I have got roughly about 13-14 oz in now. Could it have not drained fully and there be some old lube trapped inside? Also how do I drain and fill the intermediate?

yep...hard to completely drain upper...it will, however, drain more completely when drive is tilted up a little....as far as the intermediate is concerned, there is a drain plug, similar to upper and lower gearcase drain plugs, located on right side of intermediate housing and the vent plug is a larger plug located at top center of housing....in any case, you need to find yourself a service manual for that drive....there is more maintenance required than just changing the gearlube.....like the oil in the tilt housing, where to grease, etc...
