Re: Does upgrading from points to electronic distributor help?

I did the upgrade recently and for the moment the only huge change is the starting and the initial timming setting was perfect and has stayed that way. W points every other day didnt start hesitated and so..

I have no real data to say that it uses less fuel runs more etc etc but with being able to turn the key and start w no problems thats the big deal

Points where changed 3 times in 3 months and never helped, for whom thinks they lacked of maintence

I looked at your old posts and you have a Volvo AQ290A, just curious, did your points ignition actually have the ballast resistor installed? Without it, you would be changing points every month.

Im not 100% sure but ive chekced online what was that and seems i think that i had it attached to the coil, possible?

Anyway the thing with my points was that someone in the past fitted the incorrect set and modified the plate and was almost imposible to find the exact fit. Every once in a while it failed, last time got me sick and changed it to electronic and so far its been working flawless and im happy

If someone modified the plate, I would wonder what else was modified. I would be checking your total advance to make sure it is to spec.

While your problem has nothing to do with a working points system, normally points don't go bad in a month.
Knowing your distributor was modified (butchered) by some previous owner, and who knows what is wired wrong and what parts are missing, you really shouldn't be using that as a reason for someone else to change to electronic from points.

It is however a perfect time for you to make the change, and if you would like to discuss your particular problem, you should probably start a new thread of your own over in the Volvo forum, not on someone elses question in the OMC forum.

My point and Don's point is you may still have an issue with the modified distributor. Like I said before, you need to make sure your total advance is correct. If the previous owner was drilling the points plate, what did he do to the centrifugal advance that sits below the plate.
