Granted a new pair of points made the boat run much better, but the coil was still the reason the boat wouldn't start. But I'm given you guys a lot of credit. I was never a **** to you fishermark, but I will give you credit as the original post, thanks for the advice. You fellas have a wonderful day.

and I did not get flamed :) :) .
to clean the points use some acetone or spray carb cleaner or alcohol on a piece of clean towel. anything that will clean the protective coating from the contact surfaces. it will add life to the points.
on the brakes only an inspection will tell. could be most anything but like boats if ya wait till its crunching or steaming odds are it goes from preventative to corrective maint. the cost of the pads remained the same with or without rotors or bearings. same as your boat. the cost of the water pump kit or manifold/riser remains the same with or without heads, pistons or vaalvejobs. somnetimes its best to fix things like seawater pumps and drive bellows before they break.

Just another prime example why four-thirds of the world's population has trouble with fractions.....we hear but we just won't listen...

Now that's funny!! 4/3's or 1 & 1/3. Sometimes we don't see either, and the problem could be right in front of our faces.

Re: Don and Bondo my apologies

Reading through some old posts I happened upon this thread.

Regarding 'Dwell', how is it set?
Is it trial and error, remove the cap, set the gap with feeler guage and check dwell. Then pull cap again and adjust?
I had an olds with a distributor that had a window through which I could insert an allen wrench and adjust the dwell with the engine running. Without this feature I suspect its try, try again.

Re: Don and Bondo my apologies

Answer my own question...

I did a google search and found this;

"The way I set the dwell is this; remove the distributor cap and rotor, ground the coil wire and remove all the spark plugs from the engine. Set up your dwell meter and hook up a remote starter. Turn the key ON and crank the engine. Adjust the points to the desired setting and tighten the points. Crank it again to be sure the dwell angle is still correct."

I'll recruit a grandson to crank the engine while i fiddle with setting the dwell.
I have a Mercruiser 140. I read that dwell is not as critical as it is in 6 or 8 cylinders. How much improvment can I expect to gain fine tuning my engine dwell?

I'm going to pickup a timing light along with a dwell meter. Good to have at any rate.

old 2005 Thread!!!!

Old? Ancient!

My forum knowledge is showing through. Slow learner...

I tend to lurk reading through searched threads. There's sooooo much info here, I rarely need to ask!

But this being my first hole in the water, and an older model to boot, I'm certain I'll find something that I will need help with.

Already learned alot from this forum,... thanks to all who have gone before me!!:D
