hey. do you have much experience with rebuilding the intermediate housing located in the transom shield of jackshafted boats. I am having fits getting the parts from volvo. in fact if they dont send us the correct stuff monday we will be in chesapeake monday afternoon with some greasy parts to toss at that fancy building.

Re: DonS

its a 98 dp-d drive with a jack shaft. the bellows was ripped for sometime and allowed water itor the intermediate housing. I removed it and dissasembled the housing. its the same as in the picture on page 44 of the DP-E drive. anyway it had spun the outer race of the tapered roller bearing in the fwd end. I ordered a new housing and bearings. the new bearing outer races fall into the bores of the new housing. a micrometer session indicated the housings bores are .0005 larger than the bearing outer races. volvo said just go ahead and assemble it. so 2 hours later its all done but when you turn the shaft the outer race of the fwd bearing spins in the housing. I even used loctite stud and bearing goo. but I had already told the volvo tech people what was going to happen. them guys are morons sometimes. they cant seem to comprehend that a tapered bearing needs about a .002 press fit to hold the race. so its been about 9 hours on the phone with volvo and 4 days of monkey motion. so now they say they will send a new housing complete and I should have it monday morning. I just worry it will be the same way. was hoping you had had some experience with this problem. its the second one I have had problems with in 5 years. and the procedure for setting the rolling torque is a total joke. its worse than the spring scale and string trick for the upper housing bearing box.

Re: DonS

I've never had to replace the housings. Bearings a couple of times, but never ran into a housing problem. Not many boats with jackshafts up here. Only 2 I am aware of. Both diesel. a 42 and a 41.<br />But I agree with your fish scale and string trick. But it's still better than dog clutches ;)

Re: DonS

the only reason I replaced the housing was because the outer race had been spun in it. it wore the numbers off the race. but the new housing is actually looser than the old one. its been a night mare. even trying to order DP-A2 drives with 8 spline yokes. they sent two sets with fine spline yokes then finnaly sent me a kit with the correct yokes but no seal or crush sleeves. they did have the new long bolt. these two albermarles are killing me. a whole week and still both are sitting on the rack. now one of the drives has a bad suspension fork and I have to replace it due to a casting flaw. its been one of them weeks. :) :) <br /> but I will agree with ya on the cones verses dogs :) :)

Hey Rodbolt, Got any use for a alpha shift plate spacer that gives about 1" of clearence for tall valve covers. I made a clean one out of 1/2 in aluminum before I put the Imco risers on. and now it's gathering dust.

Hey Rodbolt,.......<br />I know this Isn't what you want to hear,.....<br />And,..... No Doubt you've used this "Trick" before,... Though probably Not on Brand New Parts,.......<br />But,.....<br />A .0005 Clearence Issue can be resolved with a Prickpunch,+ a Hammer...........

Bondo<br /> while I will use that method on the side of the road to put trailer bearings back togeter with a dying flashlight and a bic lighter while swatting skeeters I wont do it with a new 800 dollar housing and 150 dollars worth of bearings. they can either ship me the correctly machined parts or monday afternoon the marina owner and I will be sitting in the offices of Volvo in chesapeake VA. its only 1.5 hours from my house. this boat will leave the dock with 280 gallons of fuel and return the next day on fumes. it runs a lot. 28ft albermarle with a pair of 7.4's jackshafted to a pair of DP-D drives. the drives will be new so I want no other problems. they charge 200 dollars per haul out. should have seen me burning off the two lower brace nuts on the transome shield. laying inside the fishbox with an oxy/scetylene rig :) :) . the 245 gallon main tank is about 9" away. figgeued if it blew it would not matter to me :) :) .
