Don't have a clue about I/O's.

I bought a boat today that has a 4 cyl. GM engine and OMC400 Outdrive. I have owned 2 V-drives and 2 Jets but never an I/O before. Can anyone tell me where I can get an owners and/or repair manual ? I would like to service the engine and outdrive before putting it in the water and I don't have a clue when it comes to the outdrive.

Welcome Aboard JW
The good news is the 3.0 is good little motor, its about the same as far as service goes as any gm motor, it takes special plugs, and a special distributer and coil dependin on the year.

You ll need to post the year and serial numbers of the motor and outdrive so everyone can help you. It helps to know the size of the boat as well.

Howdy JW,

It appears that you may have use an actual email address for your user name.

You should really ask one of the moderators to delete that user name and establish another similar (non-email) name. If you leave it as your email you'll get spammed from here to next year! The are a lot of autobot programs that search for email addresses on discussion forums and it's best that you not put your email address in an open forum.


Ebay is a really good place to find manuals for the old OMC drives etc...

I'm not sure how my email address ended up as a user name. I reregistered and it came out right this time. Where would I find the serial number on that little 4 banger and outdrive? This is a 1979 Silverline boat. I've seen quite a few Silverline boats on Craigs list but i"ve never seen one like this one before. The guy I bought it from said he has never seen one like it either. It is 16Ft. It has a very small, about 6" high, wrap around windsheild, closed bow, full width engine cover. Two swivel bucket seats and a bench seat cross in front of the engine cover. A very nice looking little boat. A whole lot less boat than the 26 Ft. Sleekcraft Daycruiser I just sold. I'm sure it will be alot of fun though and with way lower operating costs. 4 Banger VS built 454.

Unfortunately,.... The OMC 400 Stringer Drive is a Dead Horse,.....
It's been out of production for Many Years,+ Parts are between Rare,+ Nonexistent......
If you plan to keep the hull,... You'd better plan on refitting it with a Merc or Volvo as well....
