Don't know where to start

Hello all,

I'm new to the forum and have a questions. I'm pretty sure it's been asked before, so please forgive me. Here goes...

I have a 6HP Johnson Sailmaster of unknown vintage. I am sure that the impeller needs to be replaced and the lower unit oil needs changing. The oil should be a no brainer (even for me), but I'm not sure how to go about changing the waterpump impeller, or even how to get at it to ensure that it does need replacement. This is my 2nd winter owning the boat and I know for a fact that it has not had any attention since I got it. It was changed yearly by the PO. All that to ask the 1st question. Where on the motor do I get the model number and from that number, how do I tell what year the motor is.

I have other questions concerning actually changing the impeller, but I'll save them for another time.

I appreciate any help ya'll have to offer.

Re: Don't know where to start

You could look on the transom bracket for a model number or look on the motor itself.Usually near the head on the block is a welch plug...a round disc type plug with numbers on it..
Post what you find.
Oh, and Welcome to Iboats!

Welcome to iboats. there should be a 1"x3" plate or sticker on the transom mount somewhere. or remove the cover, and look for a silver quarter size disc with numbers on it. post the numbers here, and we will do our best to help you out.

Model number should be on a plate on the port side of the transom bracket.

You can just see it on this 6hp Evinrude Yachtwin (1984)

If its like mine no prob just doing the pump but take the extension off with the gearcase, then clean the drive shaft and remove the extension from the gear case. (cos there's a bush in the extension that the shaft has to slide thru.)

You'll see the pump on top of the gearcase.

If the pump is pumping OK and there is no signs of overheating the impeller should last longer than a couple of years.

Recurring problem with mine is with the grommet at the top of the water tube. That's a power head off and gearcase off job to fix.

Drain the oil and if there is any water you'll need to also be replacing all the seals. If not fill with fresh oil by using a squeezy bottle in via the bottom hole until it flows from the top. New washers (or O rings) on the screws.

Re: Don't know where to start

OK folks,

It took a few days, but I think I've got the number I need. Now if ya'll can decode it and let me know what year we're talking about here we'll be in business. Also, what's the key to the model number, which digit indicates year model?

I appreciate the help

OOPS. I guess you'll need that number won't you.

Here it is, as found on the motor: J6SLCEC (or maybe J65LCEC).

Thanks,

You can "read" the model number using the chart below; it includes the S for Sail Model and L for Longshaft (20"):

Cool, got it. It's an '89. Now for the next step. I'll probably be back with a million and three questions. I appreciate the help.
