Hello again from the Aleutian Islands of Alaska,

This may not be the proper forum for this (moderator please bump if necessary).
I've spent the last five weeks working on my 1996 V-4 88SPL . Previous owner(s) made all kinds of claims of it's history and maintenance service. I took them for their word. Recently I decided to remove the heads to replace the head gaskets and the water jacket gaskets. Even though I was told they were just replaced last year, the symptoms I experienced led to this. I assure you that from what I saw today they were not replaced.

For people who just got an engine and are having issues, do NOT take the previous owners word in regards to maintenance and history as an absolute. Get a manual, do the diagnostic and troubleshooting charts listed to resolve your problems.

Of course these forums are a great assist as well.

I've had owner's lie to me, hiring me to check out what they say. How many old mechanics' on this board have seen this/

I suppose it is redundant, but: Always discount any outboard purchase that does not follow an on-the-water, under load demonstration.

I haven't come across an outboard yet that was exactly what the seller said it was.

if I buy a boat or motor, I'm going to assume it's not river ready until I take it home and make it river ready

I'm not going to trust someone elses word for my safety on the water

when I go looking for motors, in my mind, regardless if what the seller tells me, i consider it non running and requiring work to get it in river ready condition.

if it turns out that it required no work to get it river ready, then great, I'm excited, and if it needs work, then I'm not disapointed

The wife's brother is a wizard at anything mechanical. No need to look at anything he did.
