I have a waverunner to fix, and the owner or marina put this vinyl tape over the holes. For anyone who thinks about doing something like this, please don't. It just makes your repair shop's job harder. Some of this stuff is really hard to peel off, and you can never get all the adhesive off. Then it clogs up your grinding discs and tou barely get to use them before they're done. This goes for any tape, duct, vinyl, blue shrink tape, all of it sucks.

Gee, one would think tape is preferable to sinking, no?

Gee, use some acetone to get it off.

5 seconds with a heat gun, scrape with a knife, then 10 seconds with acetone on a rag

Yeah, that's not how it works. Heat and scraper yes, but the tape will often come off in pieces. A lot of this glue doesn't come off very quick with acetone either.

As far as being preferable to sinking, don't go out with a holed hull.

Have you tried an eraser wheel with the tape?

I use them to remove decals quite a bit, and I'm impressed with how well they do - even with old baked on stuff.

I'm pretty sure I have. It might work on some of the thinner stuff, but a lot of it is just too gummy. The stuff I just took off was really thick. Heat, scrape a couple inches, clean scraper, repeat. It's just an annoying waste of time for me.

I have just finished doing some of this on my 18hp Tohatsu. I had to remove the factory stickers off the top cover . I used a sharp wood chisel to slice the sticker off in strips and turps and a rag to remove the glue . Took me about 15 mins . And I didnt have a winge at anyone 😆

Goo Gone or Goof Off usually makes very quick work of adhesives. I've used that several times to clean off shrink wrap tape from previous winterization.

Going to be re-doing my reg numbers this year as the cheap home improvement store lettering is falling apart.

We have a citrus based solvent called "Dissolve it" that also works well.

Vinyl decals are different. The adhesive isn't as thick or aggressive. For those heat gun and acetone work pretty easily. Old one that come off in bits can also easily be done with the eraser wheel.

If you get paid by the hour…..win, win.

Also- would Flex Seal spray be better than tape? I mean I watched a guy build a boat out of screen doors, it seemed pretty durable. (Asking for a friend).

Wet sanding paper can minimize the clogging of sandpaper. I bought an air powered orbital disc sander. It uses velcro fasteners The paint on my speedboat melts when sanded, so the cool wet sanding works.

When I removed the decals of my outboard hoods and midsections, I used a heat gun and after that, solvents. Then prep for paint and new decals.

I'm hourly, but I make decent money because I care about the shop too. The quicker I get it done, the more money we make, and the sooner I get a raise. Everybody wins. It just annoyed me because if I didn't have to deal with the tape I could have had it glassed before lunch.

Flex seal? Dear god no. From some personal use and stuff I've heard, you couldn't pay me to use it again.
