Downloading XP SP3-problems!

I just reloaded the XP OS onto the laptop. I cleaned up all the junk then tried to update the SP2 reload to SP3. It would not work. I thought maybe all the deletions I made messed things up so I reloaded the OS again. Before making any changes I once again tried to download SP3 thru Windows update. It still will not go. When I open the update site I get a message that it can't happen. I even tried to do it thru CNET.

What is going on?

Re: Downloading XP SP3-problems!

XP is no longer supported by Microsoft.

Not true Bubba, it will be supported till sometime in 2014. SP2 versions are not supported, though.

I took Buzzpoints recommendation and am currently downloading the network version of SP3. It was the only thing I ran across that would download. It is installing as I type this.

I turned off all the powersavers on the laptop and left it on for two days hoping that it would do an automatic update. It never did.

I am wondering if it would not be wise to get ahold of a CD of SP3. As long as a laptop continues to function I don't think I would ever upgrade the OS and if you ever had to reload XP you might not be able to get it after they quit supporting it.

If you look here: http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?c2=1173

XP sp3 came out in 08 and was supported for another 2 years. Yes Microsoft makes sp3 available for enterpise customers in order to keep legacy machines running (that's what you found) but do not expect automatic updates to function. Personally, I see that as a huge security risk if the lap top is used on line but of course that's a personal call.

The end of XP SP3 extended support is April 8th 2014;

Automatic updates still coming my way for XP SP3 machines at home and work. While I think XP was a great OS, I'm very happy using Win 7. ;)

Ditto, I am still getting regular updates on my SP3 PC's. Maybe that is why the SP2 Laptop would not get auto updates.

As for Win 7, I am sure there are many laptops that would not accommodate it. Win 7 may be fundamentally good but there were too many operational changes, IMHO, just for changes sake!

I have a copy of XP Pro Sp3 that is an OEM copy and can be installed on as many machines as you want, I would be happy to make a copy and send it your way Boom. I also have a 23-1 Windows 7 OEM disc, that allows you to install as many machines as you want, it contains 23 different versions of Windows 7, including the 64 bit editions.

For the underpowered and older PC's, they did make Windows 7 starter (very basic). Unfortunately I don't think they are selling the starter software anymore. I was a die hard XP guy, and loath Vista, but I'm all about 7 now. It is very friendly to use, has some neat features and advances over XP, and best of all doesn't bloat the machine down like Vista does.

I can understand sticking with XP, especially with an older machine. They have it all figured out, and it just plain works.
