I'm looking for the part numbers for the drain and vent plug gaskets for a '54 10hp Johnson and a '56 15hp Johnson. They look like the same thing, but I know looks can be deceiving when it comes to parts. They almost look like the gaskets/washers for a '64 9.5 would fit, and I know the part number for those, but still confirmation would be nice.

Changing lower unit oil

There are 2 straight slot screw on the starboard side of the lower unit. Top is vent plug, bottom, drain and fill plug. ( do not touch Phillips head screw).

Remove the bottom plug, put container under lower unit, now remove the vent plug, while the oil is draining, replace the seals on the plugs BRP part # 311598 or Sierra part # 184248, buy several of these, ( they are a one time use item)

Walmart and many places sell a little hand pump. To use to fill the unit, you insert the tube into the bottom hole, and pump till oil reaches the vent hole. Install the vent screw, then remove hose, install the drain-fill screw, clean up mess.

The screws can be hard to get out, do not mess up the head. You may need to employ an impact screw driver to break them loose.

you are correct.. they're all the same. Look up anything from 2-40hp, '52-'74, and they'll be the same. And you really should replace 'em if they look ratty at all. When you do replace 'em, don't crank 'em on. Just seat 'em, and a bit more. They WILL seal.

find part # here:http://12.2.215.22/pub/default.asp?...=EJ,ATV,SEADOO,SKIDOO,SPORTBOAT,LYNX,ROADSTER

That link doesn't work for me. All I get is a page with a notice that my session has expired and that I should go to the "main page" to log in again. Unfortunately, Firefox can't seem to connect to the "main page" link found on THAT page.

Thanks for the info, anyway. I have a parts list for the 9.5, but not for the others.

Hmmm. I always have to put the container under the unit BEFORE I remove the bottom screw, because some of the oil always leaks out even when the vent screw is in. Always had to hurry after I filled, too, or I lost too much oil out the drain hole.

Probably indicates a leaky vent screw gasket.

Nope, just gravity. Every unit I have ever opened leaked and wanted to make a mess, even with fresh seals.

I keep a pointy top on one bottle. after installing the plug I open the vent and give it a squirt. just to be sure it is topped up.;)
