I have a 1998 VIP 2102 Victory is it even matters. I got this boat and been fixing it up and going to take it out this weekend. The boat didnt have a hull drain plug or i cant find it somewhere in there. I attached a couple of pics. I purchased just a plug that is for pipe or something from tractor supply but it seems to just screw all the way through and never tighnten up. Is there a special plug that i need to use??

Re: Drain plug question

I think you bought one size too small. Garboard plugs are generally 1/2" NPT, like this one. They are also available at any marine store and even WalMart.

Worst case, you can always buy a new fitting that comes with a plug.

Go to the local marina and buy the PLASTIC screw in plug with an O ring. That is what that fitting is designed for. The plug screws in with a large screwdriver. I think they come 2 to a pack with the O ring and cost about a buck or two. Mine were leaking so I replaced the standard O ring with a slightly thicker 3/4 I.D. X 1/8 one. I'll post a photo later. You should find them in a West Marine if you are close to one and they probably sell them here on iboats.

if it screws in, it's probably the right size, but off a fews points. you can wrap it with teflon tape. But if you are screwing metal into plastic, it will eventually wear down the threads (may have already happened).
I'd prefer a new bronze hole and plug, made for each other. That's an important piece of real estate you're working with.

+1, based on the photo...I think Frank has it right. Teflon tape around a 1/2" NPT plug may get the job done, but it's not how it was designed.
