Re: Drain Plug Seized? (HELP)

The brass garboard plug screws into a brass flange (threaded female) that is mounted in the transom. The flange has 3 phillips screws. You can unscrew the falnge and remove the entire assembly, then purchase a replacement.

Garboard Drain & Plug, 1/2" - Seachoice 18751 - iboats

I would try the impact wrench first. That has worked for me in the past. As has a breaker bar with some penetrant sprayed in there.

Not to hijack this thread...but that Freeze Off stuff is truly an incredible product. I thought PB Blaster was king until I got turned on to the CRC product. That stuff melts rust right before your eyes. It's dang expensive, and has an odor that will knock you on your donkey if you breathe too deeply near its effective range; but boy does it make a mockery of stuck fasteners. I highly recommend it.

I had a stuck sparkplug in my Waverunner (dealer installed them with no anti-seize.), held a can of air duster upside down and pointed the straw to cover the entire metal area of the plug. Spun it right off with my ratchet. So cold does work. I'm going to have to look for CRC stuff.

Take a picture of it and post it.

I would spray some Kroil on it and leave it for a day or two.

In the interim....how bout hanging a trouble light in the bilge area to help keep it above freezing...not sure where you are in NY but I know here in Central New York it isn't going to get real cold until the weekend.

CNH Industrial Strength Rust Penetrant works good too....... It's a foam..... I like the idea if all else fails remove the assembly and replace.... May be the quickest solution.....

Re: Drain Plug Seized? (HELP)

the reason he hasn't removed the whole assembly is that he can't find any screws to do so

O/P to clarify is it in the transom accessed from outside the boat OR in the bottom accessed from inside the boat?

if it's in the bottom have you looked under the boat for the screws we mentioned

Just out of curiosity, was this a boat that was moored in the water and you just took it out for the winter?

Did someone happen to use a non brass plug?

May just have to drill it out using bigger and bigger drill bits and then when you are getting close to the threads, chisel out the last part.

Re: Drain Plug Seized? (HELP)

I guess my first question is, how much water are we talking about draining? Secondly, do you care if it freezes in the bilge? Seem like the easiest solution in the meantime would be to just soak up the water with towels or use a simple hand siphon to pump it out, then deal with the garboard plug when time allows.

Re: Drain Plug Seized? (HELP)

Drilling it out with a drill bit will also allow it to drain!

Ayuh,.... A 5/16" or 3/8" hole in that plug is a start on gettin' it out, as well as enough to drain the weather out of the hull,...

1/2" will fit, if Dead Center,...

If it's 1\2" npt like mine, you have quite a ways left to go at 1/2" diameter. It's closer to 13/16" diameter

OK, let's just cut to the chase. It wasn't serviced / maintained properly so now it ain't a gonna come out. Your chances of cracking the glass are very high. You don't have a drain plug any more. Force it and if the worst happens you'll kick yourself for trying.

The supermarket - O-Cell-O sponge for 99 cents, a bucket and 10 minutes and the problem is solved.
