Drilled a hole in one of the bulkheads. Opinions?

Was wondering on the condition of my stringers, decided to drill a small hole and snag a peek at the chips... here's what i got, any opinions. The deck closer to the rear is pretty messed up after dropping a rock onto it (mighta started getting a tad soft), So i'd like to redo the deck in the rear portion. Is it safe to do so? or rebuild time? Chips came out dry, but no wonder since i use the boat like 6 times a year for a weekend in the summer, its under a roof otherwise. As for a pic of the bulkhead, yeah, i did realize that bayliner used pretty crappy fiberglass... Also, any other ways to check for bad stringers?

Color looks good, is it wet/damp?

I agree, color is pretty good. If you squeeze the shavings in a paper towel, do they leave a wet mark?

no not even close, 100% dry, doesn't even feel wet. Wonder why the heck the fiberglass started peeling off the bulkhead tho?

Wasn't applied very well, so your good in any case.

I only see gel, I do not see fiberglass.

imo its epoxy paint but it has a couple of fiberglass strands in it??? really stumped on what it is. What would you guys recommend to coat the new deck and bulkheads with? I was thinking to just use csm with poly resin. Maybe epoxy paint on top? Also there's poly resin which is waxed and unwaxed, which one do i get?

Any recommendations for the fiberglassing so it doesn't fall off like it did? I don't want another crappy layup.

Glass or paint or both...you will need to get to clean wood surface for a good adhesion. Lucky you the wood appears intact.

grind down to good substrate....... then go from there.

:embarassed::embarassed::embarassed: i was cutting out the deck and i cut through the hull in one spot:facepalm::facepalm::facepalm: what do I do??? Can I just glass the part where i cut through over with a couple of good layers, or is this really bad?:facepalm:

We all have done it..... anyone who claims they didnt do it while doing a hull renovation is either lucky, or is lying.

bevel both sides of the hull (inside and out), back about 2*-3" from the cut. all around the cut

progressively larger sections of 1708 both inside and out.

grind, fair and finish as required

FWIW, Dad was mounting new speakers in the boat and managed to screw thru the hull to the trailer.
I was drilling core samples and drilled thru the hull twice on the current boat.
sawed thru the hull with a chainsaw on one boat while cleaning to use seacast

it happens.

Thank you! I still have the deck out and its right in the edge of the deck, I was still buying lots of glass mat so now i guess at worst its +1 day for grinding... keeps me something to do during corona virus, and i will learn some new skillz. That boat getting screwed to the trailer made my day tho!

Will regular unwaxed resin stick to the cured stuff where its ground away? I was planning on selling the boat this week and now RRRRIP. Also how long between applications?

yes, always use un-waxed. you can do the whole repair in one application, just have your 1708 pieces cut to size when you start
