Hi Guys, I have a question concerning the type of lube to use in my Volvo 270 drive that is on my 72 glastron with the AQ190. I have been told by a few that back in the 70's the preferred lube in that drive was 10w-30 engine oil. But a couple of mechanics have said to use the synthetic variety of gear lubes now.
What weight and brand would be best for this application??

Volvo recommends using "same as engine" oil. So, if you are running 10w-30 in the engine, you should use 10w-30. I run straight 30 in my engine, so I run it in my outdrive as well. Heavier, Gear lube is not recommended in the old VP oudrives with the exception of duo prop outdrives.

I would suggest you stick with non synthetic oils. When Volvo changed over to synthetic, they also changed shift cone materials, and after several changes, stopped using engine oil. Regular ole 10w30 dino engine oil works great in those drives and has worked fine since 1972 in your case.

Thanks for the replys. I know that the drive was rebuilt about 6 years ago. Would they have put in newer internals that would accept the new synthetics? I don't want to inadvertently damage the drive if they have.

I have no clue, I wasn't there for the rebuild.

Use what you want, if it starts slipping you will know why.
