This may be a stupid question but... Is there any real difference in the Quicksilver high performance gear lube and the much less expensive LU gear oil? Other than the integrity of the warranty?

Well, it's not a scientific analysis, but the Quicksilver certainly isn't your average lube. I'd venture a guess to say it's pure synthetic, as it has none of the associated gear oil "stink". It also clings and stays to anything it touches.

If you've ever been able to put your hand on the top cap of your drive while your running along, you'd notice that it's **** near hot enough to fry an egg on.. Stern drives are under a very large amount of load. Consider that you are taking around 200 hp and making it do two 90 degree turns..

I would use nothing less than the quicksilver high performance gear lube (the green or blue stuff). The regular lube (the brown stuff) comes out of the drive all burned up (you can smell it from 50 feet away).

Scott...

Bondo, what do you make of the fact that Penzoil makes a lower gear lube oil where they claim it has special "anti-wear and corrosion inhibitors" especially for lower unit? Marketing or reality?
