Drive shaft oring size

I removed the lower unit of my 1962 28hp Johnson outboard and there didn?t appear to be any oring on the top of the drive shaft. The manual states that an oring is too placed on top of the drive shaft when reinstalling the lower unit. I?m assuming that it doesn?t go on the very top of the shaft but at the bottom of the spline where a groove has been machined. I have a lot of orings at work and will be able to install a new one once I know the dimensions of the oring including its thickness.
This is a great site and have to thank everyone who has replied to my many posts over the last few weeks

Regards Kevin

Dont put any grease at the very top of the shaft as that can cause problems. A light smear elsewhere on the splinesis good. The oring stops water ingress and corrosion/seizure between shaft splines and crank bottom splines.
If the ring goes it can become very difficult to drop the LU again

o-ring is 3/32" cross section x whatever diameter fits without stretching or hanging loose. I suppose I could go out and measure one for you.
