Drive type question

In looking at used boats I see stern drive, and I/O drive. What is the differnece between these is it just differnt terms for the same thing.

Same thing. A stern drive IS an I/O. Inboard/Outboard. The engine in inside the boat, the drive is outside, going through the transom. Hence making it a sterndrive.
An inboard is the engine and drive system inside the boat with a shaft coming out of the keel underneath. And of course, the O/B...is mounted to the transom.

Hope that helps you out. Keep in mind that there are different types of I/O's.
