Driveshaft bearings

Hello all. I've been a reader for years now. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for years of help your site has provided me with. THANK YOU. I need help getting my boat back in the water. I had a seized upper driveshaft bearing in my 1990 90hp force(906x90c) gear case. My dad wanted to"help" and decided to take the lower apart while I wasn't there for the week. He did a good job except he doesn't remember if he threw the bearings out or put them somewhere... Wow ... So now I don't have bearings to bring in to the bearing store to match up. A few questions.... Does anybody know the timken part number for both bearings that sit on the driveshaft? And I looked inside the empty case and there's still a bearing race in place in the lower portion of the vertical part of the case... I found a needle bearings on the floor that fits in there. Are those needle bearings just held in there with grease or is there a bearing cage that my dad threw out... Thanks again in advance.

The lower bearing is an outer race with (I forget the exact number) loose rollers held in by grease. the rollers should fill the race with no free space. The upper bearing is pressed on the drive shaft and difficult to get off but do-able. I MIGHT be able to get you some numbers but it will take a while. HOWEVER: If you still have the outer race, then you can take it AND the drive shaft to the bearing store. If the clerk has anything on the ball, he will be able to match the cone.

BE CAREFUL! There will be several shims under the outer race. Do not lose or damage them. THEY ARE NO LONGER AVAILABE. They are very important because they set the pinion gear lash. Leave one or more out and the gears will self destruct

Thanks for the quick reply. I will bring all those parts to the bearing place. About those shims.... I noticed one of them separated (peeled)in half half way around. I'm thinking it's still good. What's your take on it.. Thanks

Here's the upper bearing and race that sits just under the water pump that uses the shims for spacing.

Here's the lower bearing by the pinion gear that has the loose rollers. In the picture, there is a cardboard tube inserted to hold the loose rollers in place inside the race. Leave the tube in place when you install the bearing/race assy.. As you insert the drive shaft, the drive shaft will push the tube out as it holds the bearings in place.
