dropped lower unit, NOW having issues with gears JOHNSON 140

I dropped the lower unit to check the impeller, and after I put the lu back on, the throttle was very hard to shift into forward. Took it on the water and had no reverse and when I put it in neutral it was in forward gear, pretty crazy. I have been trouble shooting for a week trying to figure this out. I have taken apart the control box and checked everything. I think maybe I bent the shift rod. Here is what it is doing. The throttle cables work perfectly engaging into forward, neutral, and reverse while unhooked. But as soon as I hook the cable to the shifter thing the throttle gets hard to push and once it goes into forward it gets stuck. I got it to go into forward and neutral sometimes but as for reverse there is no hope. I can move it into forward, neutral, and reverse manually, but I am having trouble when I hook up the cable. I noticed that where it used to be in neutral is now in gear just by looking at the position of the throttle cable, so I know something is out of whack, but cannot determine whats going on. Kind of hard to explain, but maybe someone knows whats wrong?? I pulled the lu like 5 times since and cannot figure it out. I tried to leave it in neutral when putting the lu back on, but the shift rod seems to get hit during the process and always goes into gear. I am assuming I did something when I dropped the lower unit, or I am not putting it back on correctly bc it worked fine before this. Also I noticed the shift rod was wedged against the side of the tunnel it sits in and not in the direct center but not sure if this is the prob. Thanks for any response. The motor is 1988 Johnson v4 looper 140hp with omc controls.

Did you change the shift rod height by mistake? I'm not familiar with your motor, but from what I've read....the shift rod height has to be 'just right'.

Really dumb question. Do you have the the cables on the mtr reversed ??

There's one more possibility besides the 2 already mentioned, have you verified the shift rod didn't get rotated 180 degrees when you reinstalled the lower unit? I'm not sure if it's even possible to install on your engine like that, but if it is that would definitely throw things out of whack.

Thanks for the responses! I thought about it for a while and remembered I am using a lu from a 110 johnson to fit on a 140 johnson and completely forgot that the shift rod height is different. You guys were correct. I just turned the shift rod out a couple of turns and it solved that issue. The gears switch forward, neutral, and reverse just fine now. BUT I still have an issue with the control box. I believe the teeth on the plastic piece broke and now it does not shift correctly. If I go into forward, it binds and gets stuck and then gets out of whack. It gets very hard to throttle up when the two plastic pieces bind together and when it happens, it gets screwed up and then goes into nuetral prematurely and everything is messed up. I have tried messing with it for hours with no luck. I think its time for a new control box. Again thanks for the responses.

I found a control box for 100 bucs and just changed out the throttle handle and other plastic gear and I am back to good. I ran it on the rabbit ears and it sounded great. It went into gear just perfectly. Forward, reverse, and neutral all worked great. I hooked everything back up and I think she is ready for the water. Again thanks EVERYONE for the help. I will update you when I take her out again.

MY, THE HEAVENS HAVE FINALLY ANSWERED MY PRAYERS!!! EUREKA!!! Took her out on the water today and boy does it feel great!! She is idling great, pumping water fine, moving into all gears perfectly, and running WOT like a scared deer!! I hit 48.5 mph today at close to 6000 rpm that is with a 19 pitch. There is no doubt in my mind if I throw a 21 pitch on there she'll run low 50's. Anyhow the motor runs great at mid range and WOT. However at idle speed in gear seems to shake the whole boat and the steering wheel even shakes. Doesn't feel right (not smooth) at idle speed and low range speed, but as soon as it gets on a plane it runs PERFECT at all ranges (25mph to 45mph)!! Also she was smoking a lot. White smoke at ilde and low speed. But I dont care about that because it runs so good at WOT and cruise speed its unbelievable. FINALLY!! I checked the compression at the launch after I was done running and I got 125 on cylinders 1 and 3 and 130 on cylinders 2 and 4. Does this seem ok?? I may do a decarb next time. Not sure why the entire boat shakes at idle speed, but it is fine while in neutral, just soon as I put it in gear the boat shakes and steering wheel. Maybe too much motor?? Again thanks to ALL THOSE WHO HELPED ME!!
