Drum steering question

I just purchased a newer Honda 4 stroke and was wondering if or why not drum steering would not work. Seems the motors go side to side no matter age or size, so just curious. Any information is greatly appreciated!

Some adaptation would be necessary for attachment of the cables at the engine but it would work. The question is, why do this? Modern steering systems are far safer, infinitely more reliable, and far less pieces to worry about.

+1 assuming you are talking about drum being separate cables with pulleys and springs and all that. If current single cable design (outer sheath fixed, inner moves) they make drum and rack and pinion steering systems. Had both and couldn't comment on which was best. Both were trouble free and tight, very little play in the wheel.

Cable and drum steering are not recommended for higher HP motors. If you have a 50HP+ motor, a R&P or rotary steering is recommended

Agree. Only used back in the 50's-60's era because a 40 cu inch (big block) 25-35 hp OMC was considered Big; or did that 40 cu inch not come along till the 35 twins? Don't remember but was mighty impressed with what you could run nicely with a 25, or even a brown Buccaneer 22 (by OMC). A 16' plywood skiff with a wide beam, windshield, deck, 2 tanks of gas, 2 fishermen and gear, a great day on the water. I did have a friend with a Mark 55 40 hp Merc. which provided sizzling performance on a similar boat. with 2 of us in it.
