Dry Joint manifolds. Sivery paste on riser "gaskets"

When I first took the risers off my dry joint 4.3 manifolds, there was silvery paste coating the metal "gaskets". Anyone know what the paste is? It kind of looks like the exhaust pipe sealant stuff that comes in a squeeze tube at the hardware store.

Don't know what it is, but you need to replace the gaskets now, not just squeeze some goo on them. Be aware there are 3 different gaskets, depending on the cooling configuration. And the one with a small hole and a large hole need to be orientated the right way, and the inside 'lip' faces up.

Don't think I've missed anything. :D :D

Nothing that should be there. Here is all that should be on them.

not just squeeze some goo on them.

Mercruiser goo'd them. I bought the manifolds and Y pipe as "new take offs" from a boat builder that was using a different exhaust setup on a brand new 4.3/Alpha setup. The risers hadn't been off since factory assembly. Everything was obviously brand new.

I'll just follow that service manual instruction. Much obliged guys.

Despite the old parts looking quite reuseable, I do have new "gaskets" here. $80 a pair.

OEM Merc gaskets on my boat are silver colored with a coating of some sort of slippery material. That's probably what you are looking at. If they are like mine, it will be obvious when you buy new gaskets. Feels like graphite.

Yes it is graphite. It's good stuff.
