dual battery hook up

I have a Volvo penta 4.3gl PBYC. I have two marine batteries in it that I had hooked up in series giving be 24dc instead of 12vdc. oops! I then turned one of the batteries around and the alternator started to smoke. I basically need to looks at the manual to see how they are hooked up. Any ideas if I cannot find a manula online? Also, is there a possiblilty that the alterantor is fried if it smoked? I only had the batteries on for about 3 seconds. thx.the rookie

I would say more than likely once you see the magic smoke their isnt much left.

I told one of our service tech's to run up to the part's store as I let the smoke out of some wire's. Well he went there and they laughed him right out door! He was mad at me for a week! Lol........

Time to buy a battery switch (which will come with wiring instructions) and a new alternator.

The first pic is if you have a battery switch. Just imagine the O/B as your inboard and you'll be fine. If no battery switch, go with the second pic.

Why did you have the batteries wired in series -- especially since they were connected to the alternator which is a 12 volt source and incapable of charging them. Or did you mean wired in PARALLEL (POS-to-POS and NEG-to-NEG)?. Big difference. By reversing the one battery you CREATED a 24 volt system which is what smoked the system.
