Dude, I got a free boat!

Long time reader that finally decided to make an account and post...

I love free things! So I was at work the other day complaining about how I don't want to take my Ski Nautique in the salt water even though there is a great water ski area 2 miles away and the nearest lake is about 40. A co-worker says "I've got a boat you can have if you want it. It hasn't been run in a while, but it's all there and should fire right up." Now me being the project lover that I am, was not going to turn down a free boat. So here's the scoop..

Boat - 1974 Cee Bee Avenger
Condition - I'd say for a 35 year old boat, it's in good shape. Gelcoat is a bit worn, starting to crinkle in places, but all there except for a chip or two. Carpet is all there, in decent shape, one small soft spot in the floor about the size of a softball 2 feet from the transom, center deck.

Engine - 1987? Evinrude 140hp V4
Condition - Again for it's age, pretty good shape. After a new battery and a bit of love, she fired right up.

So, I've had the boat for 2 days. So far I've cut and buffed the gelcoat to help get the shine back, cleaned more rat crap than I've pretty much ever seen, and fired up the engine. The battery was toast, so I ditched it and bought a new one. Old owner was using a cheap 6 gallon tank and not the bow tank. I connected up the tank up in the bow and used that for the first time in probably years.

Took the boat down to the marina and launched her.

First drive impressions - Engine runs fine. However, the fast engine idle lever on my OMC control box doesn't do a thing. Also the throttle can be shoved all the way down, no real change in speed. There is a lot of tension on the throttle when being pressed. Moving the lever into gear and out of gear sometimes gets a reaction. Sometimes it takes some moving around to get the motor in and out of gear, which can get a bit interesting when trying to go slow or trailer the boat.

Engine trim and lift work... sometimes. If I pour fluid in the reservoir it's all good, but then fluid leaks out of the manual lift screw. Any ideas there? Maybe leaking past a oring? How do I get a new oring in there?

Need to get a fuel gauge that works, need to find a way to hook up the tach as I have no idea where I'm suppose to connect it. I'd prefer to buy a new one instead of repairing the old one. Gotta hook up a speedometer of some kind. I'd also love to find an oil pressure gauge, but again, have no idea where to hook it into.

So, what should I do about the control box. Does this sound like cables? Any idea which cables to get?

Yeah, I know, it's not a good thing. Here's the deal. I've got a 1966 Chevelle that's getting a frame off this year, I can deal with 1 project at a time. Next season I'll do the floors in the Avenger.

Unfortunately, you'll have to replace the floor, transom, and stringers. Not likely that the floor rotted without the others being bad also.

See this is you got a free motor. The boat will likely cost a small fortune to restore.

Make sure to thoroughly inspect the transom BEFORE you put it on the water.

What exactly am I looking for. Everything seems to look very normal and in good shape. Glass looks good inside and out

From the inside of the boat, drill a couple "core samples" in the transom. Drill one low and one higher up.

Just drill in about 1/2"-3/4"(transom is most likely 1 1/2"- 2" thick). Check the shavings caught in the threads of the drill bit to see if they are light/dry or dark/wet.

Ya never know, maybe you'll get lucky and your transom will be dry.

Myself, if the boat is that bad of shape, I wouldn't put a dime into it. I would take everything off of it and put it all on another boat that's more sturdier. You now have a motor, trailor, and controls, so you may as well save yourself the trouble and just find a different hull. Boats are cheap these days and plenty of them available.

Yes, I get that the floors are bad. I fully understand what I'm getting into here. I took a few samples from the transom. All appear dry and in good shape. I get that I need floors. I'm really trying to get the engine dialed in here first. Please help me here.

To get the engine dialed in, you need the factory service manual. Without it you chase your tail. Your descriptions of the issues are way to vague for us to be able to help. Control box, cables, cable adjustment, lower unit issues all can impact engine throttle and shifting. You have a two stroke outboard. Just where would you expect to find "oil pressure" on a two stroke. (Hint: there is no oil pressure on a two stroke). Speedometers are pitot driven -- only the pitot on the transom and tube run from it to the speedometer head. Fuel gauges require a sending unit in the tank. You can't do that with a 6 gallong portable tank. Tachometers (and most other gauges) require +12 volts and ground when the key is on. Fuel and water temp gauges require a matching sender on the engine. You got a free "money pit" -- not a free boat.

This could be the throttle and shift cables. Disconnect the cables at the engine and see if the linkages don't operate freely (they probably will ). Note that outboard gearcases often don't like to shift without the engine running, you can rotate the prop a little bit by hand to get the clutch dog to engage.

Then, with the cables disconnected from the engine try operating the controls. If they're still stiff the problem has to be either the control box or the cables, and my money's on the cables. As far as which cables to get you'll of course be getting OMC compatible cables. The trick is going to be getting the right length. If you can pull out the old ones and measure that'd be a big help. Search around online, I believe teleflex has information on how to measure them.

I'd also love to find an oil pressure gauge, but again, have no idea where to hook it into

Nobody else here would have a clue either :D . (that's cause there's no such thing on a 2-stroke). A water pressure gauge could be useful, they sell 'em here on iboats and are easy to hook up. You'd T it into the tell-tale line.

Re: Dude, I got a free boat!

Thanks guys. I don't know where I was going with the oil pressure gauge. I guess I'm use to the plane and car.

Speaking of planes... is that your citabria silvertip?

Like I said, I know it's gonna take money. I'm not worried about that. I'm worried about figuring out what I have, then making informed decisions about where to go. I don't want to go rip into the floor without making a squawk sheet of other issues that need to be addressed while I'm doing the floors. I did the same thing with the chevelle... scratch that... there was nothing but a sorta rolling frame there... that was a total wreck.

I want to get this thing on the water, get it up to some speed, and figure out where I need to proceed.

It doesn't appear there is a fuel filter in line. What fuel filter should I get for this?

My gosh, that is a gorgeous boat! I'd be tempted to replace the floor and stringers as well, even though I hate hate HATE fiberglass work!
Pretty much any place that has outboard supplies will sell an inline filter. The water separators are nice.

BTW, you are a pretty awful person for mentioning your '66 chevelle without posting a pic! :)

ok....where do you work where they give away these free boats.....and where do i get an application? it does look nice, but as mentioned, make sure the transom is good before you run it hard, or it could be a disaster waiting to happen. other than that , it should be a nice project boat. .....and where are the pics of the chevelle?. ( i dearly miss my 65 nova)

I will make sure to post a photo of the Chevelle, the frame is done, it's in the process of getting the paint done.
Yeah the boat is in great shape for its age. I am an air traffic controller with the FAA. A coworker is moving to the east coast and gave me the boat becuase he couldn't take it with him

Before the frame off... Seal Beach car show. Ignore the dude with the camera boom.. I wish I had the kind of money he had to blow on photography

I have never had a free boat. I have had some that cost me nothing until I had to work on them. Hope it all works out. boats are awesome especially if you have enough money!

That is a sharp boat (and car). You have to use your own judgment on the soft spot. My first boat had several soft spots and I used it for 10 years. Main thing was the transom. '73 15ft Crestliner / 85 HP. The boat you have appears to have a Long shaft motor with a short transom - I'm not sure by the photo, but that would give extra torque on the transom (rip it out). Wear your life vests.
