Dumb question about mounting motor

I just got a used boat only 1 year old and I noticed the 115 HP outboard is not touching the transom by about 1 inch and is bolted instead with 4 huge bolts. Shouldn't the bottom of the motor be touching the top of the transom? Seems like a dumb question but if thats how the dealer rigged it, I must be missing something. Never had a motor this big before. Can anyone fill me in? Thanks

Re: Dumb question about mounting motor

My v-4's are not mounted sitting on the transom due to the height adjustment. I had a 115 Mariner that was also 2" above......fairly common practice. Yep, those 4 1/2" bolts will hold it fine........... provided the transom is in good shape.

The motor should never touch the transom. If it did you would hear all kinds of noise being transfered through the hull. The best place for the drive is about a foot behind the transom, this places the drive in the cleanest water for best performance. You can look up "Jack Plates".

He isn't talking about the drive, he is talking the top part of the 'hook' section on the mount. In some cases, it can be touching, but in many other times, it will be well above the transom. It basically comes down to this... If someone took the time to actually test and position the motor correctly, it will be above. If someone just slapped a motor on, its going to be on the hooks.

Thanks I think but I'm not asking the question. Do you have a suggestion or answer for the OP ?

motor mount 1.JPGmotormount2.JPGYes I am talking about the 1" space between the top of the transom and the part of the motor that normally sits on the transom. See pics. Thanks for your replies.

hate to break it to ya but you weren't making any sense or didn't understand the o/p's question

he responded to your post because it was likely to send the O/P astray

No problem at all as long as it puts the anti-ventilation plate even with or a little above the bottom of the transom.

Sounds like someone may have taken the time to measure and put the motor on a small boat correctly.

Honestly, I would of never though in a million years it was done like that since the motor weighs like 600 lbs and all that weight is on the 4 bolts and none on the transom. Learn something every day I guess. I am relieved I dont have that issue to correct then if so.

Sure do appreicate the response and clarificationbut I thought I was very clear.
is not touching the transom by an inch
I always thought this was a forum which allowed different opinions of the issue without repocussion, only issue was a further clarification of the issue. So my responce was singled out to make some kind of a point , so I will take this under advisement and understand this is not a forum to which expression of opinion is welcomed.

Wish I had a program to know who had the authority for each section of the forumand is listed as unquestionable. I know who has the Merc section and now I know who has the boat topics questions, look forward to know who has the other sections.\\I sure am sorry to have said anything which may have upset you

You STILL aren't making sense... NOBODY is above question on any post here... if you, I, or anyone else says something right or wrong, ANYONE can freely express either fact or opinion contrary to it and further they can very specifically quote and refute what you, I, or anyone else has said.

BTW what exactly WERE the repercussions you suffered? Nobody beat you up or even insulted you.

Oh, for goodness sake, stop being a horse's behind. You suggested a jack plate, which is often a great solution. But it often doesn't make economic sense. We don't know if the OP is having any performance issues, so that's a question for another day or thread, perhaps.

Think of it like this. Each of those half inch bolts holding it has a shear strength of several thousand pounds. There's plenty of safety margin there except for very large outboards on high performance boats.

What ya' really want to be looking at is the height of the AV plate in relation to the water's surface when you're running on plane. You want to make sure the AV plate is just above the surface, if it's lower than that it's going to be adding a lot of drag and slowing you down. And depending on the hull design and any setback that could put the AV plate significantly above the bottom of the hull. (Mine is about 8 inches above it for instance).

Re: Dumb question about mounting motor

To the OP if you look at you transom mounting bracket you will see 4 holes at the top and a slot at the bottom. If you want you can lift or drop the engine using the extra holes. So there's no problem with the hook not touching the transom as that is how it was designed.

I don't believe I had singled your post out, I very simply clarified what I knew the OP was asking, as I've been there myself. I do believe you singled my post out though, for not having any information or answering the OP's question, which in fact, it EXACTLY answered what he was asking. (attached for reference) (as well as others commenting on your comments regarding my post)

Anyway, late enough at night to let this topic die. OP has what he needs, and anything else is internet noise.

It basically comes down to this... If someone took the time to actually test and position the motor correctly, it will be above. If someone just slapped a motor on, its going to be on the hooks.
