I have a 5.0 mercruiser 1998. I have been looking at this forum for about a month and everyone is saying the choke should be closed when starting. Is this opposite of what a car does? And yes my boat does crank now. It was more out of timing than I expected. thanks all for your help on that one.

Re: Dumb question time

It would be the same as a car. The only significant difference between a car and boat carb is the overflow. Oh yeah, plus a fitting for a hose to the fuel pump vent. Both help keep the boat from going Boom.

To get the choke to close, pump the throttle twice before starting. You do that with cars with carbs too.

In most cases, boat carbs have a choke pull-off that heats with power from the alternator. If the alternator fails, it will stay choked.

No, it's not opposite what OLD cars DID. They are all EFI now and have been for years and years. EFI doesn't have a choke or a carb.
