just bought a mercury 110 older 9.8hp are these air cooled see no water pickup points (thunderbolt ignition)

It is water cooled. Water intake is on the bottom of the cavitation plate directly above prop.

this thing must be missing some thing there is just hole there no way water could be forced in the way it is

The hole is probally only 3/4". Water doesn't get forced into it. Water is sucked in via internal water pump.

first year they made the merc 110 was 1962 and this motor was painted cloud white.... as for your intake vent, you must be misisng your screen, but its water cooled when the pump is primed it has no problem drawing water.... when you lift your motor out of the water and you see water coming out of a few holes... those holes are meant to prime your pump so it doesnt just rely on the main water intake....
