Dumb tach question

Guys,
I am restoring a 63 starcraft holiday and I have a question. I needed to pull off the motor (73 60HP johnson) to replace the transom and when I was disconnecting the motor I noticed a red wire not connected to anything in the motor. It did have a U fitting on the end but it was just balled up in the inside of the motor. when I pulled it out with the rest of the wires (plug) I figured it wasn't used anymore. After going through all the wiring on the boat I found that this wire is connected to my tach, which was wroking the last time used the boat. The question is where is this supposed to be connected to in the motor? Any help would be great!
Thanks,
James

Re: Dumb tach question

The wire is connected to what terminal of the tachometer? There are usually four terminals.

Re: Dumb tach question

Joe,
There was only one wire (sender) that was connected to the tach guage that ran back to the motor, not four.
Thanks,
James

Re: Dumb tach question

The tachometer sensor wire has always been gray in color, not red. However if the tachometer is the proper tachometer, the sensor (sender) wire would be connected to the Yellow/Gray wire of the rectifier/stator terminal.

If no Yellow/Gray wire exists but instead there are two plain Yellow wires of the rectifier/stator, connect the sender wire to either of the yellow wire terminals.
