today i made my own heat resistant epoxy put a lighter to it & does not set alight , i experimented 1st of all with Westsystems Epoxy & mixed it with 411 Microsphere Blend Light wieght filling aditive , left to go rock hard , put a ciggarret lighter to it & it caught alight imediately .

then i found a piece of asbestos got my medium file out & filed some off collected the fileing powder & mixed it with the epoxy after getting rock hard i put the ciggarret lighter to it wouldnt burn no ways & still stayed stuck to the pice of metal i had it on , i was happy with the results now onto fixing this hole in the exhaust adapotor with this formula .

Really? You filed and used asbestos powder? I sure hope you had a bunch of PPE on your entire body. Not something I would mess with.

You realize there are other products available that are not carcegenic?

Filing asbestos makes it friable, and airborne, where it is most dangerous. I really hoped you protected yourself while doing this with P100 filters and other PPE.

WOW,,"piece of asbestos got my medium file out & filed some off collected the filing powder" The dangers associated with Asbestos is real,If you'r not familiar with these dangers ,Google it. Back to the issue ,I would sagest,to Braze, Not only to fill the hole but also cover the complete inside with a coat of brass.,Unless you do there is not much life left in it, i have used this method with new parts and get great extended life from it

filling the hole is easy, use your file to shape the hole down to a good surface to braze, then cut a piece of steel to plug the hole snugly, use your file again, then braze it in place

no worryies iam very onto things k , the asbestos i used is not the type they used in the early days , cause i know that stuff is dangerous & highly explosive in new zealand they have a type of fire proof board they biuld houses with i used a piece of that board & filed it , it doesnt burn , & the powder from that bonds very well with the epoxy :)

Huh??? ;)

Asbestos is the same, whether they mined it 60 years ago or 1 year ago, its properties do not change.

It is highly dangerous, but explosive??

The board you used is usually safe to be around, in its found state, similar to floor tiles and the like made of asbestos, because the fibers cannot become airborne. Once you mechanically file or grind them, they then become airborne and become dangerous.

Ill stop ranting, I dont mean to scold you, but just warning you that it is not only dangerous to yourself, but others as well in your household. My company does asbestos abatement, and I am certified to remove it. Alot of my co workers and their family have died from exposure to it, which is why I am so animate about this topic. Wives died from washing their husbands coveralls that they wore at work around the asbestos.

Actually they still mine it in Quebec. They sell it to third world countries.

We do alot of things that are not ethical or right, but why do we do it? Money, that is why.

You are right, technology has changed, and they have substitutes for asbestos, which is what we are trying to say to you. There is no need for using it and risking damaging your health.

Asbestoes is a dangerous material, yet unfortunately it is also a VERY good product. It is amazing when you take apart old boilers and turbines how good the asbestos gaskets are. The new gaskets dont hold up anywhere near as well. They dont kill you though.

i dont know how stringent your government is.....but asbestos is a big no no here in canada. the only building material that i can think of that even resembles the old asbestos board would be a product like dura-rock, which is a concrete based alternative to gypsum board.

Not all of Canada.....Quebec has its own set of rules, lol

They say they are their own "country" though, so I guess we dont have to label them as a part of Canada

Yep, our kiwi friends are quite the proactive type.....they still have bans on anything nuclear powered from entering their ports.

Re: durbans heat resistant epoxy formula

The main asbestosis problem was with "Blue asbestos" the white is not harmless but nothing at all like the blue stuff.
Loads of things still use the white asbestos, but i dont know of anything using the blue asbestos.

Now if the powder is a bluish white then its dangerous full stop.

I think its good that durban is trying to make his special coating and letting people know its fire retardent.

Durban likes to invent, and he has proven his stuff to be a good long lasting burnproof material.
I would love it if he lived next door to me, he could paint my engines anyday.

Durban does do a lot of experiments and i think he knows a thing or two about chemicals and the bad side of
many of them.

I say well done durban, atleast he is doing these experiments to make it all safe, how many firms would just
pump out any old crap and not full test it !!!!!!!!

You can mix dirt with epoxy resin and it wont burn under a lighter, if the resin is not designed for hi-temps (1000?) it will: burn ,degrade, become brittle and flake off or turn to a dough and slough off...
