Heh... well said Jay... Long live the classic outboard :) I can't believe a 40 would weigh 240 lbs when a 1960 Johnson 40 weighed 129 lbs... (the first year they made em)

THe big weight problem with the 40 hp is it is using the same gearcase as the 50 and 60 ETEC's. They could have bolted the 40hp powerhead to a smaller mid section and gearcase but then thats adding more parts to the lineup. BRP tries to use as many parts as possiable from engine size to engine size. I can tell you this. You will not have a gearcase failure on a 40hp.

True on the gearcase thing and that is nothing new - OMC did the same thing for years once the one piece gear cases came out. If I am not mistaken, the 70s era two cylinder motors in the 50-55hp range had the same gearcase and midsection as the triples.

the two cylinder etecs are really over built with heavy duty parts making them stronger than most.
