I hope I'm saying this correctly....I have a 1986 Evinrude XP150 and it apparently has gotten a small exhaust leak where the power head mates up to the mid unit. I rebuilt this motor about 10yrs ago and when we went to set the power head on, we thought the gasket partially tore, so we added some extra liquid gasket sealer and hoped for the best. The way we saw it, it'd be a week or two to get a new gasket and we were already there ready to bolt on, so if it didn't hold we'd just go back and fix once I got the gasket. Needless to say, I ordered the gasket way back then so I have it and it finally started leaking, so it's time to replace it. I'll look back in the manual and also look for some you-tubes, but I'm curious if anyone can tell me how long this should take to perform? I figure while I'm at it, it's not too much more work to replace the water pump, so I'll get one ordered as well. I'm getting good pressure on it still, but it hasn't been replaced since the rebuild....I know that's a long time, but I had installed a gauge and I have the tell-tale, so it's been well monitored. Do I just replace the rubber impeller or buy a whole kit?
As for the gasket, should I just be able to just lift the power head straight up, slide in a new gasket and go down the road? I'm guessing I unbolt the 4-6 bolts that hold it to the mid unit, unhook the linkage and that should be about it....am I correct? Since I don't have easy access to an engine hoist, I'm either backing it into a neighbors garage and using his electric winch, which hangs from the rafters to skin deer with or I'll take some scaffold and hook a chain hoist to that.
Any idea on weight, 200lbs? time frame involved? Shop wanted $400, which seems expensive.....is that worth it?
