Earmuffs fell off. Is motor shot?

I was starting up the motor today after doing some work on it. I had the muffs on and it started right up. After about 1 minute I started hearing a metal to metal sound, I noticed the muffs had slipped and wasnt fully covering the lower unit holes.

Well I quickly shut the motor off, adjusted the muff back on, When I started the motor back, I heard that same metal to metal noise again. When I turned the key off the motor kept running.

Is my motor shot?

It's a 1980 80hp mercury.

no, I think it's haunted.

Less than a minute off the muffs at idle--should be OK but hard to say. Maybe the impeller burned up/fell apart and that is what you are hearing.
Can't see how that would keep the motor running after the key was turned off.

I'm thinking the metal noise and continued running are from the work you did on it, and not the muff thing?

was it getting no water at all? did they fall off or just slip down? If I were you I'd replace my impeller. Have you ever seen the pictures of those things after they run for a few seconds with out water? They melt down.

I would have to take the flywheel off to check the impeller wouldnt I? I dont think the muffs were all the way off. They just slipped.

Whats got me puzzled is why the motor will not turn off when I turn the key off.. I have to choke it out.

Impeller is at top of gearcase. If motor didn't shut off, you have bad ground in ign switch, or bad ign switch or bad wiring.

The motor was turning off just fine before that happened.

O.K. so lets throw a little logic in here...

We already know that you didn't change the impeller because you think it's under the flywheel and it's definitely not.

You said it turned off fine before that which leads us to believe that you were starting it and stopping it before you noticed that the muffs had slipped off.

You said you noticed that they had slipped off after about a minute of running but we all know there is no such thing as a minute so we'll go with at least 5 minutes of water starvation.

There's our baseline for troubleshooting that metal to metal noise.

Questions you need to answer for us:

1. What kind of work did you do to the motor.
2. When the motor cooled down, did you try to start it and if so did it start? Did it stop? Was the noise still there?
3. Where do you think the noise is comming from?

O.K.#3 is a tough one because noises telegraph horribly in outboard motors.

1. I checked the plugs to make sure they were getting spark.

2. Yes I tried to start it again. It fired right up but made that metal2metal sound again.

3. Sounded like it was coming from the top of the motor where the flywheel is.

My guess is you have two different, unrelated problems. 1st, you need to replace your impeller. That is most likely the cause of the noise you are hearing as well. Your 2nd problem is ignition related. Does your motor have a lanyard-type kill switch? When happens when you pull the kill switch?

Could the starter be sticking?

No the starter isnt sticking.. I did a video so you all could actually hear what it sounds like. My wife takes the key out at about the 20 second mark, and you see how I had to kill the motor.

What oil mixture are you running? Are you getting a steady tell-tale stream of water?

I am using 16:1 mixture and yes there is a steady stream of water running out of it. I took the boat to the lake this past weekend and it ran but I had to hold the choke in so it wouldnt stall. It was still making that rattling noise too.

You should be mixing a 50 to 1 fuel mix. If you messed with the timming setting you could have it timmed to fast and getting noise from the fuel firing to soon. Best take it to a shop an have it looked at. Replace the water pump also.

Well let me rephrase that. I put 2 bottles of 2 cycle oil in for 5 gallons of gas.

I am about to take it in and just hopes it dont cost to much to get it fixed.

I added 32 oz. to 5 gallons gas. Which now tells me I need to add more.
